Spartan reliever currently leads the Big Ten in saves.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball reliever Kyle Bischoff was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award Midseason Watch List.
Bischoff is a graduate senior transfer from Toledo and a native of Macomb, Michigan (Eisenhower HS). He currently leads the Big Ten Conference and ranks tied for 10th in the NCAA with nine saves. The Spartan reliever picked up his ninth save Wednesday night vs. Purdue Fort Wayne, ringing up his second strikeout of the ninth inning to end the game and seal the Victory for MSU. For the season, Bischoff has a 2-1 record in 16 appearances, registering 26 strikeouts and nine walks in 26.0 IP.
Last week, Bischoff picked up a pair of saves and a win in three appearances. He collected two saves in as many days, against Eastern Michigan on April 19 and Oakland the next night on April 20. He then came on in relief in the first inning of Sunday's game at Northwestern and went on to throw a career-high 6.1 IP and earned the win. The 6.1 IP was more than three times longer than his season-high of 2.0 IP and nearly double of his previous career-long outing of 3.1 IP during his time at Toledo.
The NCBWA will announce the finalists on Wednesday, June 8 with the winner being named on Friday, June 17 at the 2022 College World Series.
The NCBWA, founded in 1962, presents the Dick Howser Trophy to the nation's top player and the Mike Martin National Coach of the Year to the nation's top coach. It also selects All-America Teams for all Divisions, a Division I Freshman All-America team, rookie hitter and pitcher of the year, Division I, II and III Dick Howser Trophy National Players and Pitchers of the Week and Division II and III National Players and Pitchers of the Year.
Bischoff and the Spartans host Minnesota in a three-game B1G weekend series, Friday-Sunday April 29-May 1. The series between the Spartans and Golden Gophers opens Friday at 6:35 p.m., before Saturday's second game of the series at 4:05 p.m. and wraps up on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
The week schedule is subject to change based on weather.
