Spartans Enter Final Round of Big Ten Championships in First Place

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's golf team shot a 13-over par 301 on Saturday in the second round of the Big Ten Championships and will enter Sunday's final round with a one-shot lead at The Pete Dye Course at the French Lick Resort in Indiana.
The Spartans stand in first place in the field of 14 teams with a 36-hole score of 1-over par 577, one shot ahead of Illinois, who is second at 2-over par 578.
Purdue is in third place at 6-over par 582, with Northwestern in fourth at 8-over par 584 and Maryland in fifth place at 9-over par 585.
Second Round Results
The Spartans opened the tournament by firing a 12-under par 276 and had four golfers among the top-10 overall to open up an 8-shot lead heading into the second round.
MSU continued to lead through the front nine, but saw its lead shrink to four shots. After playing the entire back nine on Friday with no bogies, the Spartans had 12 between holes 10 and 14 before coming back with five birdies over the final four holes, including a pair by senior Troy Taylor.
The Spartans, ranked No. 46 in the country by Golfstat, have two players among the top-10 and three among the top-20 in the individual standings.
Sophomore August Meekhof is the leader for Michigan State, entering the final round in fourth place overall at 2-under par 142. He shot a 2-over par 74 in Saturday's second round, posting three birdies and 10 pars.
Senior James Piot is one shot back, in a tie for fifth place at 1-under par 143. After a 6-under par 66 on Friday, he posted a 5-over par 77 on Saturday, with five bogies and 13 pars.
Freshman Ashton McCulloch tied with Meekhof for the best individual score of the day for MSU with a 2-over par 74. He is tied for 12th place overall at 2-over par 146. McCulloch finished the day with five birdies, including four on the front nine.
Junior Brad Smithson is tied for 22nd place at 3-over par 147 following a 4-over par 76 in Saturday's second round. Smithson's round included 11 pars and two birdies.
Senior Troy Taylor shot an 11-over par 83 on Saturday and is tied for 50th place overall at 10-over par 154.
The Spartans, seeking their first Big Ten Championship since 2008, will tee off at 9:25 a.m., playing alongside Illinois and Purdue.
