EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women's tennis team returns home after a four-match stretch on the road to host rival Michigan in a Big Ten contest on Saturday, April 9.
A 3 p.m. start will see the two sides square off at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center, as the Spartans are set to play four of their final regular season matches in East Lansing. Slated No. 75 in this week's ITA rankings, MSU enters the weekend at 9-8 overall and 1-5 in the conference, while the Wolverines' 11-5 mark has helped them earn the No. 22 team ranking from the ITA and 18th in the latest USTA Top-25 poll.
The Green and White are coming off a weekend trip that saw the team fall at Penn State on April 2 before being swept the next day at No. 8 Ohio State.
Last Saturday's contest with the Nittany Lions started well with the Spartans taking the doubles point, thanks to a deciding 7-5 win from the second pairing of sophomore Ayshe Can and freshman Charlotte Gisclon in their first match together. PSU was able to recover and win singles matches on the top-4 courts, halting senior Lauren Lemonds' 4-3 lead over Alexandra Nielsen on Court 5 and the 2-2 tie on No. 6 between Gisclon and Danielle Alamo.
The Sunday showdown with the eighth-ranked Buckeyes opened with OSU grabbing two quick wins on the second and third doubles courts to go up, 1-0. MSU then dropped matches on the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles courts, with Ohio State clinching a victory to stay perfect in the B1G standings.
On the season, Can paces the team with a 13-7 singles record, while Lemonds is behind her with 12 singles wins. Gisclon and senior Maja Pietrowicz each have double-digit singles wins as well at 11 apiece.
Pietrowicz and graduate student Mary Lewis, who have combined to go 14-10 this season with a 2-1 record against ranked opponents, lead doubles play for MSU. Second on the team is Gisclon and senior Nicole Stephens, who were 8-4 as a duo before losing five straight.
Michigan enters the rivalry meeting the winners in six of its last seven, as a five-match winning streak was snapped by a 4-3 loss to OSU, but the Wolverines responded with a 4-1 victory at PSU. Kari Miller is the highest ranked singles player for Michigan, coming in at No. 13 on the ITA rankings with a 21-8 record, while Jaedan Brown is 73rd at a 22-11 mark, Nicole Hammond is 119th at 20-8 and Andrea Cerdan holds the 121st spot with an 18-10 record. Brown and Cerdan are also 10-4 as a doubles pairing, ranking No. 70 in the nation.
The all-time series sits at 54-19 in favor of the Wolverines, as Michigan took a pair of victories over the Spartans last season. A 5-2 loss on March 21 saw Samantha Memije and Stephens win their singles matches, while the April 18 meeting ended 4-1 in favor of the Wolverines after the Lewis/Pietrowicz and Memije/Stephens pairings won their doubles matches.
Michigan State continues the final stretch of the regular season on April 14, welcoming Iowa to East Lansing for a 5 p.m. opening serve.
