Spartans Beaten By Buckeyes In Saturday’s Series Opener

Game start was delayed over two hours due to weather.
After the series was originally slated for Friday-Sunday, it was pushed back to Saturday-Monday due to inclement weather in the Columbus area. Furthermore, Saturday's game was originally slated to start at 3:05 p.m., but pre-game rain and snow delays pushed the start time back over two hours, to a 5:17 start time.
"I don't think the delay affected anything, both teams had to sit through it, it was just one of those things where we were waiting it out to play, and it was the right call to wait it out. The last thing we wanted to do was get both starting pitchers hot and ready to go, and have to delay the game because of rain and snow, which we probably would have had to do if we started on time, so it was a good move to do that," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said.
The series schedule has further been altered and will now wrap up on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
The Spartans scored five runs on nine hits, led by sophomore infielder Dillon Kark going 2-for-4 with a run score, as the lone MSU player with multiple hits, but one of four Spartans with a double on the day.
Ohio State rapped out 20 hits, including three for extra bases, and scored 13 runs, scoring seven in the second and five in the sixth, before one in the eighth.
"On our end of it, just really disappointing on the mound; we've got to get out of the second inning," Boss said. "At the end of the second inning they had eight hits and seven runs, all of which were earned, and we need to be better. We need to better on the mound. We tried to chip away a little bit at the plate and get ourselves into a couple of good counts and a couple good positions, but they made pitches when they needed to and we didn't. We couldn't avoid the big inning today and we gave up two big innings, and we couldn't add a big inning on the offensive end."
Along with Kark, sophomore infielder Mitch Jebb was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, knocking a two-run single in the fifth. Junior outfielder Casey Mayes was 1-for-2 with a run scored to go with a stolen base, walk and hit-by-pitch. Sophomore infielder Trent Farquhar was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while sophomore outfielder Jack Frank and redshirt-freshman designated hitter Christian Williams were both 1-for-4 with an RBI apiece. Sophomore infielder Brock Vradenburg was 1-for-4 with a run scored, and junior outfielder Peter Ahn was 1-for-5. Farquhar, Ahn, Mayes and Kark knocked doubles.
On the mound, sophomore starter Harrison Cook yielded seven runs on eight hits in 2.0 IP with three Ks and one walk, before giving way to junior Jack Brockhaus, who threw 3.1 IP with three hits, one run, two Ks and one BB. Sophomore Dominic Hann allowed five hits and four runs and a walk in 0.1 IP, before junior Brian Martin came on to halt the rally, finishing the final 2.1 IP with four hits, one walk, one K and one BB.
Ohio State broke through in a big way with a seven-run second inning, knocking seven hits, including a two-run triple by Trey Lipsey.
The Spartans got a run back in the fourth on an RBI infield single by Williams, driving in Jebb who started the rally with a walk and moved to second on a groundout, then darted around to score on Williams' hit to the right side of the infield.
MSU got within 7-3 in the fifth, as Mayes started things off reaching after getting hit by a pitch, and Vradenburg followed with a single. Three batters later, Farquhar walked to load the bases full of Spartans, and Jebb knocked a two-run single to plate Mayes and Vradenburg.
The Buckeyes broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning on six hits, with five singles and a double, to open a 12-3 advantage.
MSU got two runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Farquhar off the wall in right center, driving in Kark who led off with a double down the line. After a groundout moved Farquhar to third, Frank plated Farquhar with a single up the middle to pull the visiting Spartans within 12-5.
OSU added a run in the eighth for a 13-5 lead.
Michigan State and Ohio State will wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 10, starting at 1:05 p.m.
Michigan State will return home for off days Monday and Tuesday, after Tuesday's originally scheduled contest vs. Eastern Michigan was postponed until April 20.
The Spartans will then host Western Michigan on Wednesday, April 13, in a 6:35 p.m. start time, at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field.
