COLUMBUS, Ohio - Michigan State rowing wrapped up racing at the Ohio State Regatta on Saturday afternoon, picking up four wins and three second-place finishes across the morning and afternoon sessions.Â
The Spartans raced seven boats at the regatta, five varsity crews and two slates of novice rowers. The novices won three of four races on Saturday, one in the morning and three in the afternoon. Michigan State's second varsity four crew won their race in the afternoon, while the first varsity four boat came in second in their race against Indiana and Oklahoma.Â
"We had a really strong day today, facing our first Big Ten competitors of the season," head coach Kim Chavers commented. "The novice eights and fours had a good showing, and it was great to see closer margins in our varsity races against other conference teams."
MSU started out the day strong with a second-place showing in the second novice/fourth varsity eight race, taking second place ahead of Indiana with a time of 7:28.4. In Michigan State's second race of the day, the novice eight crew went up against conference foe Indiana and Oklahoma, winning the race by a four-second margin. The Spartans finished in 7:15.3, trailed by Indiana who finished in 7:19.7.Â
In the afternoon session beginning at 1 p.m., the Spartans won back-to-back races with novice crews. The second novice crew cruised past host Ohio State and Indiana, winning the race in 7:23.8. The first novice eight boat followed up the win with a victory of their own over the Hoosiers, 7:15.8-7:24.2, MSU's largest margin of victory of the day.Â
The fourth and final Spartan victory of the day was in the second varsity four race. The crew of coxswain Kendall Gonya, Kat Borders, Emily Petrosky, Kiersten Korber and Morgan Jenzen beat Indiana's boat by over ten seconds, crossing the finish line at 7:48.1 ahead of the Hoosiers, who finished at 7:58.4.
