Michigan State Taken Down By No. 14 Notre Dame Tuesday
5/10/2022 10:42:00 PM | Baseball
Indiana native Christian Williams goes 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Fighting Irish jumped out to a big lead, before the Spartans closed the gap, only to have Notre Dame pull away for the 15-6 final score.
"It was disappointing tonight, I thought offensively we weren't very good early, but I give our guys credit because they continued to battle and we were able to put some runs up in the second half of the game," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "Defensively we played well, but we gave up 10 free base runners on walks and hit batters and it's too much against a really, really good team like Notre Dame that doesn't beat themselves. So we need to be better in that regard, and if we clean some things up there, I think we can beat a lot of people."
Tuesday was Michigan State's fourth game in the last three days after playing a doubleheader on Sunday at Penn State, then a single game on Monday, before returning home and arriving back on campus after midnight. MSU then boarded a bus Tuesday afternoon for the trip to South Bend, returning home after the game. The Spartans will then head to Kalamazoo on Wednesday for a match-up at Western Michigan at 4:05 p.m.
Additionally, Tuesday was the third battle with Notre Dame this season, but was the first played on either team's home field. The Irish won the season series, two games to one. MSU lost to Notre Dame, 2-1, on March 5 in Minneapolis at U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings, before the Spartans won, 6-2 on April 26 at Detroit at Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers.
Redshirt-freshman catcher Christian Williams, one of two Indiana natives on the Spartan roster, was 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored, one of three Spartans with multiple hits. Sophomore infielders Mitch Jebb and Dillon Kark joined him, as Jebb was 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Kark was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Junior outfielder Zaid Walker and sophomore infielder Brock Vradenburg were both 1-for-3, with Walker knocking two RBI and scoring a run, while Vradenburg added an RBI. Sophomore infielder Trent Farquhar, junior outfielder Casey Mayes and redshirt-freshman designated hitter Christian Williams were all 1-for-4, with Broecker scoring a pair of runs, and Mayes touching home once.
Junior left-hander Jack Brockhaus made the first start of his Spartan career on the mound, and had an explosive opening inning, getting a groundout, before yielding a walk. Brockhaus then got a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play on a caught stealing attempt as his battery mate, Williams threw down to Farquhar for the tag to nab the Notre Dame base runner.
Brockhaus went 2.1 IP with five hits, yielding six runs and two walks, while ringing up one strikeout and hitting one batter. Freshman Ryan Szczepaniak pitched 1.2 IP, spraying two hits and two runs, with one punchout, but had three walks and two hit batters. Sophomore Brian Martin threw the final 4.0 IP, scattering eight hits with seven runs and walking one and hitting one batter, while chalking up three strikeouts.
The Irish broke through in a big way in the third with six runs on four hits, with the big blow coming on two-run home run by Ryan Cole, later chasing Brockhaus before MSU brought in Szczepaniak and he later got a foulout to end the rally.
Notre Dame added to its lead with two runs in the fourth to open an 8-0 advantage.
The Spartans got on the board in the fifth, as Broecker and Vradenburg knocked back-to-back singles off new Notre Dame reliever Matt Bedford for MSU's first hits of the night. Broecker moved to third on a Kark groundout and scored on a Walker RBI groundout.
Michigan State trimmed the gap in half in the top of the seventh with a two-out rally on alternating double-single-double-single pattern, sparked by Kark with a double to the wall in the left center gap. Walker followed with an RBI single to center, and the Spartan outfielder later advanced to second on a wild pitch with Williams at the plate. Williams later smacked a double just inside the third base bag and down into the left field corner to drive in Walker. Jebb then laced a single to center to plate Williams and pull the Spartans within 8-4.
Notre Dame countered with five runs after the stretch to open a 13-4 lead.
The Spartans didn't go quietly into the warm, South Bend evening, as Mayes led off the eighth with a bunt single, followed by Broecker reaching on a fielder's choice, with Mayes moving to third on an Irish error. Vradenburg then followed with a sac fly to left to plate Mayes. Kark followed with a single, and two batters later, Williams knocked a single to center to bring Broecker in, pulling MSU within, 13-6.
The Irish tacked on two runs in the bottom of the eighth to complete the scoring.
Michigan State continues its hectic stretch of five games in four days in three states, heading to Kalamazoo, Mich. to take on Western Michigan on Wednesday, May 11 at 4:05 p.m. at WMU's Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field.
MSU then returns home to host Iowa, Friday-Sunday, May 13-15 in the final home games and Sunday will be MSU's Senior Day. The Spartans and Hawkeyes open the series on Friday evening at 6:35 p.m., before Saturday's 4:05 p.m. first pitch and the series finale on Spartan Senior Day with a 1:05 p.m. start time.
The Spartans' schedule is subject to change based on weather.
