Men’s Golf Tied for Eighth Place after First Round at NCAA Bryan Regional

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's golf team is tied for eighth place among 13 teams after shooting a 5-over par 293 in the first round of the NCAA Bryan Regional on Monday.
The NCAA Bryan Regional is being played on the par 72, 7,146-yard Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas. The regional continues on Tuesday with 18 holes and concludes on Wednesday. The top five teams from each regional will then advance to the national championships, to be played from May 27 to June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
First Round Results
Arizona, seeded sixth in the field, leads the regional after firing a 12-under par 276. Pepperdine, the No. 1 seed, is second at 9-under par 279, with host Texas A&M third at 8-under par 280, Georgia in fourth place at 7-under par 281 and Oregon State fifth at 3-under par 285.
The Spartans are among a group of four teams within eight shots of the final qualifying spot. SMU is sixth at even par 288, followed by Kansas in seventh at 1-over par 289 and MSU is tied for eighth with Colorado State at 5-over par 293.
Sophomore August Meekhof leads MSU, carding a 2-under par 70 and finishing the first round in a tie for 11th place individually. Meekhof played the back nine in 3-under par and finished his round with five birdies and 10 pars.
Senior Troy Taylor is one shot back, tied for 16th place at 1-under par 71. Taylor played the front nine in 2-under par with birdies on the first and ninth holes, respectively, and finished the back nine with a birdie and six pars.
Senior James Piot and freshman Ashton McCulloch are tied for 51st place with scores of 4-over par 76, respectively. Piot was even-par through the front nine, but posted a triple bogey on the par-4, 428-yard 12th hole and finished the back at 4-over par. McCulloch was even-par on the front as well and finished the back nine with a pair of bogies and a double bogey.
Junior Bradley Smithson shot a 7-over par 79 and is tied for 63rd place. He finished his round with a pair of birdies and nine pars.
The Spartans will tee off on Tuesday between 9:25 a.m. and 10:09 (ET), playing along side Kansas and Colorado State.
