Frank knocks team-leading eighth HR of season part of 2-3 outing.
MSU has now played in back-to-back 11-8 ballgames, winning Sunday's Spartan Senior Day game by that score, before losing by that count Tuesday night.
Sophomore outfielder Jack Frank was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, belting a solo HR to lead off the third inning. Frank was one of four Spartans with multiple hits Tuesday night, as MSU rapped out 11 hits. Graduate senior outfielder Peter Ahn and redshirt-freshman catcher Bryan Broecker were both 2-for-4, with Ahn notching an RBI and a run scored, while junior outfielder Casey Mayes was 2-for-5 with two ribbies and a run scored.
Sophomore infielders Mitch Jebb and Brock Vradenburg were both 1-for-3, with Jebb scoring a run and Vradenburg driving in a run, while fellow sophomore infielder Trent Farquhar was 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and also made a spectacular leaping catch in the fourth.
On the mound, freshman Aidan Arbaugh was dealt the loss, yielding three hits and five runs with two walks in the first inning, before giving way to redshirt-freshman Dominic Pianto, who went 4.1 IP, scattering six hits, with four runs, two walks and one strikeout. Junior Andrew Carson saw 1.1 IP of work, logging two hits, two runs, three BB and two Ks. Graduate senior Kyle Bischoff went 1.0 IP with just a hit and no runs, before junior Wyatt Rush threw the final 1.0 IP, a hitless, scoreless frame with one punchout.
The Spartans erupted out of the box in the top of the first, as Jebb smacked a triple to right center to lead off the game, and Farquhar followed with a single through the right side on the first pitch he saw to drive in Jebb with the first run of the night. After Frank was hit by a pitch, both he and Farquhar moved up a bag on a wild pitch, and then Mayes cleared the bases with a triple to right center and scoring on a Michigan throwing error for the "Little League" home run to put MSU on top early, 4-0.
Michigan State's lead was countered by a big inning from the home team, plating nine runs to take a 9-4 advantage after just one inning.
The Spartans got a run back in the top of the third on Frank's solo no-doubt HR to right center, his second round-tripper in the four games against Michigan this season, both going to right center. It was also Frank's team-leading ninth home run of the season and his MSU career.
MSU closed to 9-7 in the fifth as Farquhar sparked the rally with a walk. After Frank walked, two batters later Kark grounded out, but it was enough to plate Farquhar. Ahn followed with a double to the left-center gap to drive in Frank and pull the Spartans within 9-7, before the rally later came to a halt, leaving the bases loaded in the sixth.
Michigan State put together another rally in the seventh to pull within a run, as Ahn laced a one-out single through the left side and Broecker followed with a single the opposite way. Vradenburg came to bat next and he knocked a double to right to drive in Ahn and cause a Michigan pitching change. Two batters later Jebb walked to load the bases with two outs, but the rally came to a close without the tying run able to score, leaving score 9-8.
The Wolverines added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh without any outs, before Bischoff induced a double play and popup to end the stanza and the UM rally for an 11-8 ballgame, and that stayed the score for the final two innings to end the game.
Michigan State now heads to Lincoln, Neb. for a three-game Big Ten Conference set at Nebraska, Thursday-Saturday, May 19-21, to wrap-up regular-season action, with Thursday and Friday's games starting at 7:35 p.m., before Saturday's finale at 1:05 p.m. All three games will be streamed on B1G+, with Friday's game being regionally televised on Nebraska Public Media, formerly known as NET.
