Five Spartans Earn All-Big Ten Accolades

Jebb and Bischoff on Third-Team, Broecker and Szczepaniak on All-Freshman Team, Iverson earns Sportsmanship Award.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball had five players recognized by the Big Ten Conference with postseason awards announced Tuesday afternoon by the league office, with the completion of the 2022 regular-season.
Sophomore infielder Mitch Jebb and graduate senior relief pitcher Kyle Bischoff both garnered All-Big Ten Third Team accolades, while redshirt-freshman catcher Bryan Broecker and freshman pitcher Ryan Szczepaniak were both tabbed to the All-Freshman Team. Senior utility player Zach Iverson was MSU's Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Michigan State's five All-Big Ten honorees this season gives Michigan State a total of 54 All-Big Ten accolades under head coach Jake Boss Jr. It is also moves Michigan State's All-Freshman Team honorees to 23 total, as the Spartans have had at least one freshman collect the accolade in the last 13 years that the awards were presented, as they were not presented in 2020, due to the canceling of the remainder of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jebb, a native of Saginaw, Michigan, led MSU and ranked tied for eighth in the B1G with a .356 average, also topping the team and ranking fifth in the B1G with 78 hits. He also leads the team in stolen bases and walks, ranking eighth in the conference with 20 stolen bases and sixth in the league with 38 walks. Additionally, Jebb led the Big Ten and ranked 17th in the NCAA in toughest to strikeout - with just one K every 13.7 ABs - on just 16 Ks in 209 ABs. He was also tied for second on the team and tied for seventh in the B1G with three triples. Jebb also had MSU's longest hitting streak (14 games) and reached base streak (19 games), along with team-high for multiple hit games (23) and multiple RBI games (12). In the field, the Spartan shortstop was third in the B1G with 29 fielding double plays, and sixth in assists with 138. Jebb was named Big Ten Player of the Week on March 16, for this first career B1G weekly honor, for his performance during MSU's four games during the week of March 7-13 in Greenville, South Carolina at Fluor Field, highlighted by belting two HR in the same game including a leadoff HR and then a two-run walk-off HR to cap the Spartan comeback in a 10-8 Victory for MSU over Cincinnati.
Bischoff, a Macomb, Michigan native, had a standout season in his one season for the Green & White, transferring to MSU from Toledo. He led MSU and the Big Ten with 12 saves, ranking No. 2 on MSU's single-season saves list behind Jeff Kinley's school-record 13 saves in 2014. Bischoff had a 2-1 record, leading MSU with a 3.51 ERA, tallying 36 strikeouts in 41.0 IP. During a span of just over a week during the season, he earned three saves and a win. He earned back-to-back saves in MSU's wins over Oakland on April 19 and over Eastern Michigan a night later, then came on in early relief in MSU's win at Northwestern on April 24, coming on in the first inning with the bases loaded and pitched a career-high 6.1 IP of relief to earn the win. He then collected the save in MSU's win over Purdue Fort Wayne on April 27. Bischoff was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award Midseason Watch List.
Broecker, a native of Chicago, Illinois, was the Spartans' primary catcher this season, leading the B1G in caught stealing by nabbing 22 stolen base attempts, six more than the second spot. In B1G only action, Broecker threw out 11 base stealing attempts, also leading the league and posting three more than the number two spot. At the plate, Broecker hit .271 overall, ranking tied for fifth on the team, as well as fourth on the team in runs scored (31) and fifth in hits (48), along with third in hit by pitch (7). Broecker had a season-long six-game hitting streak, along with a 12-game reached base streak. He posted 10 multiple hit outings and six multiple RBI games, traking tied for fourth on the Spartan squad.
Szczepaniak, a Woodhaven, Michigan native, posted a 4-3 overall record, sharing the team lead in wins, while ranking fifth on the team in both innings pitched (42.1) and appearances, (16), making eight starts and eight relief appearances. He finished with 35 strikeouts, ranking sixth on the team. Szczepaniak had a smashing debut, striking out seven in his debut start at UNLV in 5.0 IP, yielding just two four hits and two runs. He also earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors on March 9 for his performance on March 6 against nationally-ranked West Virginia, firing 5.0 IP with four strikeouts, allowing just three hits and one earned run in stymieing the WVU bats to improve to 2-0 on the young season. He allowed a leadoff single and later a hit batter in the first inning, settling in and retiring seven Mountaineers.
Iverson, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, was hampered by injury this season, making four starts on the mound and seeing action in two games at first base, before suffering an arm injury and was unable to pitch the remainder of the season. Iverson finished with 18 Ks in the four appearances. He returned to action at designated hitter, making 32 at bats with seven hits, one double and two RBI for a .219 average. Iverson was also a leader in the dugout and off the field, providing veteran leadership to his Spartan teammates.
MSU finished with a 24-30 overall record and an 8-16 B1G ledger. The Spartans said farewell to five seniors: Iverson, Bischoff and outfielder Peter Ahn, along with two student managers, Aaron Boise and Tommy Merlo.
