EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State Track and Field saw both its men's and women's programs honored as 2022 All-Academic Teams on Wednesday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, while 14 Spartans were named USTFCCCA All-Academic Athletes as well.
This is the second-straight season that both the MSU men's and women's squads have earned academic honors from the USTFCCCA. More than 150 NCAA Division I teams captured accolades on Wednesday.
For a program to capture USTFCCA All-Academic status, both individual teams must combine for a 3.0 GPA.
Individually, Heath Baldwin, John Petruno, Noah Sage, Trevor Stephenson and Ryan Talbot picked up USTFCCCA All-Academic honors on the men's side. For the women, Lauren Freeland, Lynsie Gram, Melanie Helder, Jenna Magness, Katie Osika, Calli Ostapowicz, Makayla Perez, Kate Stewart-Barnett and Quiara Wheeler were named as All-Academic Athletes.
For Gram, Magness, Ostapowicz and Stephenson, this is their third time earning the individual honor, while Talbot, Osika, Perez and Wheeler are all now two-time recipients. Baldwin, Petruno, Sage, Freeland, Helder and Stewart-Barnett all received the honor for the first time.
Magness also earned CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team accolades last month, while Stephenson and Helder were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District list.
Overall, there were more than 1,600 athletes who were named All-Academic Athletes in NCAA Division I.
To be eligible for individual accolades, athletes must hold a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above while also being either an NCAA qualifier, among the top-96 nationally in your respective event according to the NCAA indoor list or in the top-48 regionally on the NCAA outdoor list.
