Tori Franklin Becomes First American Woman to Medal in Triple Jump at World Athletic Championships

The former Spartan All-American takes home the bronze medal.

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former Spartan track & field athlete Tori Franklin became the first American woman to medal in the triple jump, capturing the bronze medal at the World Athletic Championships late Monday night at Hayward Stadium in Eugene, Oregon.

With a season-best jump of 14.72m, Franklin held third place after an opening jump of 14.53m. Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela won the gold with a jump of 15.47m, while Shanieka Ricketts of Jamaica captured the silver medal with a distance of 14.89m.

In the 2019 championship in London, Franklin just missed reaching the finals with a best jump of 14.03m. Franklin became the first Spartan to reach the World Athletic Championships since Nicole Bush ran the 3000m steeplechase in 2013.

Franklin also competed for Team USA in the 2020 Olympics in Toyko last year. The former All-American holds the MSU school record in both the indoor and outdoor triple jump.
