Spartans Finish Tied for Fourth Place at Gopher Invitational

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's golf team shot a 1-over par 285 in the final round and finished in a tie for fourth place among 15 teams at the Gopher Invitational, played at the Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn.
The Spartans were in second place entering the final round and finished the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a score of 11-under par 841, tying for fourth place with host Minnesota.
Final Results
Georgia Southern fired a 9-under par 275 in the final round and finished at 20-under par 832 to finish five strokes ahead of Kansas and Kent State, who tied for second place at 15-under par 837.
Michigan State posted a 9-under par 275 in the first round and tied with Georgia Southern for lowest team round of the tournament.
Junior August Meekhof and fifth year Troy Taylor II tied for 18th place to lead the Spartans, finishing at 3-under par 210. Meekhof shot an even-par 71 in Tuesday's round, while Taylor finished with a 1-over par 72.
Senior Bradley Smithson carded an even-par 71 in the third round and was the third MSU scorer, tying for 25th place at 2-under par 211.
Sophomore Ashton McCulloch tied for 33rd place at even-par 213, finishing with a 3-over par 74.
Senior Drew Hackett shot an even-par 71 on Tuesday and tied for 44th place at 2-over par 215.
Michigan State is back in action on Monday, Sept. 26, hosting the Folds of Honor Collegiate at American Dunes Golf Course in Grand Haven, Mich. The three-day event concludes on Wednesday, Sept. 28. The 18-team tournament will benefit the Folds of Honor and the Golf Coaches Association of America Presidential Scholarship Fund. In addition to Michigan State, the 18-team field includes Air Force, Arizona, Army, Central Michigan, Clemson, Eastern Michigan, Florida State, Grand Valley State, Illinois, Kansas, Liberty, Navy, NC State, Oregon State, Texas Southern, UCLA, and Virginia Union. Annually, the tournament will feature two HBCU programs. This reflects the 41-percent of Folds of Honor recipients that are minorities and the GCAA and Black Golf Coaches Association of America partnership to help grow opportunities for HBCU and black college golf.
