Season Opener Results in Tie for Fifth Place at Cougar Classic

East Lansing, Mich. – The season-opening Cougar Classic resulted in a tie for fifth place among 18 teams for the Michigan State women's golf team. The two-day, 54-hole event was held at Yeamans Hall in Charleston, S.C.
The Spartans shot a 4-over par 288 in Tuesday's final round and tied for fifth place with Miami at even-par 852.
Final Results
Ole Miss topped the field at 13-under par 839, one shot ahead of second place Clemson (12-under par 840). The College of Charleston finished in third place at 3-under par 849, with Florida State fourth at 2-under par 850 and MSU and Miami rounded out the top-five teams.
Sophomore Katie Lu was the top finisher for the Spartans, tying for 24th place at 1-under par 212. She closed with a 1-over par 72 on Tuesday. Lu had the second-best round of the tournament in Monday's second round, firing a 4-under par 67.
Sophomore Brooke Biermann shot a 3-over par 74 on Tuesday and tied for 26th place at even-par 213.
Fifth year Valery Plata shot a 1-under par 70 in the final round and tied for 31st place at 1-over par 214.
Junior Valentina Rossi tied for 34th place at 2-over par 215, carding a 1-over par 72 in the final round.
Junior Nina Rissi finished tied for 82nd placed at 13-over par 226, posting a 7-over par 78 on Tuesday.
Michigan State is back in action next week, starting play in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. on Monday, Sept. 19. The two-day event runs through Tuesday, Sept. 20.
