Hanssen, Rutherford Named to NFHCA Collegiate Watch List

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State field hockey senior Merel Hanssen and sophomore Ellie Rutherford have been named to the 2022 NFHCA Collegiate Watch List, as announced by the organization Tuesday.
The watch list, which consists of 254 collegiate student-athletes across all three divisions, is intended to represent field hockey student-athletes with the strongest potential for consideration to the 2022 NFHCA All-Region and All-American teams.
Hanssen, a midfielder out of Maastricht, Netherlands, has started in all four games for the Spartans this season and ranks fourth on the team in points scored (1 g, 2 a). In 2021, she earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors and was named to the NFHCA All-West Region Second Team.
Rutherford leads Michigan State in goals this season with three and has made four starts in four games at midfield. The Edinburgh, Scotland native was selected as the team's rookie of the year during the 2021 season and was named Big Ten Rookie of the Week on Sept. 13, 2021.
Both Hanssen and Rutherford were named to the Big Ten Field Hockey Players to Watch List earlier this season.
Spartan field hockey opens Big Ten Play this week, hosting No. 19 Rutgers at Ralph Young Field at 1 p.m.
