East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State head men's basketball coach Tom Izzo and the Spartans held their first practice of the 2022-23 season on Monday afternoon.
Following a 45-minute press conference with the local media, Izzo and his team went through two hours of practice in the auxiliary gym of the Breslin Center.
"Hard to believe I used to do this press conference three weeks later than now because October 15 is a long ways from now," Izzo said. "It's hard to believe we're starting on the 26th, but I'm excited to get going. I'm looking forward to arguably what will be one of the toughest seasons in my 28 years here. I feel like we're getting back to normal as a campus, hopefully we can get our home court back to normal, which I think we will.
"I know we have the Campout this weekend on Friday, which will be the 26th time I've slept out there, but it is a fun time and I'm looking forward to that. And the guys are really looking forward to the (Midnight) Madness on October 7. That will be something that will be great for everyone."
Michigan State opens the regular season on Monday, Nov. 7, hosting Northern Arizona at the Breslin Center (7 p.m., B1G+).
Following that game, the Spartans play Gonzaga in the Armed Forces Classic on Friday, Nov. 11; Kentucky in the Champions Classic on Tuesday, Nov. 15; host Villanova in the Gavitt Tipoff Games on Friday, Nov. 18; play three games in the Phil Knight Invitational from Nov. 24-27, (starting with Alabama and then versus UConn or Oregon) and then hit the road to play at Notre Dame in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge (Wednesday, Nov. 30).
"I'm looking forward to scheduling the world," Izzo said in reference to the team's first eight games. "The aircraft carrier game will be a special event, the Tournament of Champions, the PK80, Villanova at home, at Notre Dame, they're all going to be very good games. Hopefully as our players who were here for the reunion a couple of weeks ago said, 'That's why you come.'
"I like the group I've got. It's smaller, I don't like that, but we made a choice and the choice was to stick with the people we've got, develop them, try to keep the homegrown guys and understand that some of these guys are ready for breakout years."
The men's basketball team will host an exhibition game on Tuesday, Nov. 1 against Grand Valley State (7 p.m., B1G+).
