Michigan State Set for 25th Anniversary Season
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State rowing head coach Kim Chavers announced the program's 2023 spring racing schedule, featuring six regattas highlighted by the team's first home race in the greater-Lansing area since the 2017 season.
Â
"We are really excited to announce our 2023 schedule," Chavers said. "Our program has seen steady growth over the past few seasons, and we are thrilled to get back to work for our 25th anniversary campaign. The schedule features a lot of opportunities that will challenge our athletes to become the best versions of themselves, in addition to an incredible chance to get out on the water in front of Spartan Nation on April 15. There are so many exciting things happening in and around Spartan Rowing, and the announcement of our schedule for the spring season adds another element of excitement to the mix."
Â
The Spartans hit the water for the first time and open their 25th anniversary season on Friday, March 31, as MSU heads to Sarasota, Florida, to take part in the Sunshine State Invite. The event features UCF, Miami, Stetson, Jacksonville, Tulsa, Kansas State, Drexel, Louisville, North Carolina, West Virginia, Kansas, Wisconsin and Old Dominion. Racing in Michigan State's first event of the year will conclude the following day, on Saturday, April 1.
Â
The Green & White remain in Sarasota for the 2023 Big Ten Invitational, set to begin on Friday, April 7, and run through Saturday, April 8. Michigan State will take the water and race against challengers from Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State, Rutgers, Wisconsin, Alabama, Brown, UCF, Duke, SMU, Stanford, Tennessee and UCLA.
Â
For the first time since 2017, the Green & White will welcome competitors to the greater-Lansing area for racing on Saturday, April 15, with MSU set to host Miami (FL), Temple and Tulsa on Lake Ovid in Sleepy Hollow State Park. The race site is located in Laingsburg, Michigan, a mere 25 minutes away from the campus of Michigan State University via U.S. Highway 127. The Spartans last welcomed fans for regular-season racing in mid-Michigan on April 8, 2017, when MSU split a Big Ten Double Dual against Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Â
Action resumes the following week, as Michigan State joins a competitive field at the 2023 OSU Invite in Columbus, Ohio, hosted by Ohio State University on Saturday, April 22. MSU concludes regular-season competition on Saturday, April 29, as the Spartans head to Bloomington, Indiana, to take part in the Dale England Cup, hosted by Indiana University. The Green & White open postseason racing on Sunday, May 14, as the eight Big Ten rowing programs converge on Indianapolis for the 2023 Big Ten Rowing Championships from the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Reservoir.
Â
Last season, Michigan State cemented their best finish at the Big Ten Rowing Championships in five years, tallying 47 team points in Indianapolis highlighted by a fourth-place showing in the varsity four race. Three individuals return from the crew that saw an MSU boat reach the top-four at the Big Ten Championships for the first time since 2017, including coxswain Sophia Stauffer, Breanna Berry and Julie Armstrong. The Spartans also welcome the return of two-time All-Big Ten selection Maya Elbaranes, who took home All-Big Ten First Team honors in the 2022 campaign.
