
Michigan State Falls Short at Illinois, 75-66

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Michigan State had a nine-point lead in the second half, but could not hang on as Illinois used a late run to take the lead and held on to beat the Spartans, 75-66, at State Farm Arena in a Big Ten men's basketball game Friday night.
Junior guard A.J. Hoggard scored 20 points and had four rebounds to lead the Spartans, while senior guard Tyson Walker added 14 points and four rebounds and graduate forward Joey Hauser had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Michigan State falls to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten, while Illinois improves to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in league play.

- Michigan State led 37-33 at the break and had a 44-41 lead before scoring six-straight points, with a jumper from Hoggard, a dunk from Akins and two technical free throws from Hauser that gave the Spartans a 50-41 lead, their biggest of the game.

- After shooting 51.5 percent in the first half (17-of-33), the Spartans connected on just 34.4 percent of their second half shots (11-of-32).
- MSU did not hit a 3-pointer, missing all seven attempts.
- The Spartans limited Illinois to just 37.5 percent shooting in the first half (12-of-32), but they connected on 53.6 percent in the second half (15-of-28).
