EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Senior captain Ashley Harlock is one of six Michigan State University students, along with two alumni that were nominated for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.
Â
The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest and perhaps most prestigious international scholarship program, enabling outstanding young people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. The U.S. Rhodes Scholarship awards 32 scholarships, and the Global Rhodes Scholarship awards two scholarships. MSU has produced 20 Rhodes Scholars.
Â
Harlock has received the Human and Miriam Stein Scholarship from MSU honors college. She was in the lab during the summer working on chronic cocaine use on endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in the brains of mice. Her research pursuits will ultimately help her get to where she wants to be – which is a neuroscientist.
Â
Head coach Helen Knull is extremely proud of her standout student-athlete, "Ashley has worked exceptionally hard during her time at Michigan State to put herself in this position and now it's paying off," she noted, "It has been a journey these past three and half years. She has put herself in the position to accomplish all of her goals. We are very proud of her and happy we got to play a part in her academic and athletic journey."
Â
With a busy schedule as a student-athlete, Harlock also spends her time in the research lab, mentoring, is the current president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and is involved in community outreach activities. But for Harlock, this work has prepared her for the future she has planned.
Â
"I have always had some pretty big goals and aspirations, and MSU has provided me with every opportunity," said Harlock. "The athletics department has been really supportive. I been able to pursue every academic interest I have, ranging from my double major to the honors college, to my research lab. This honor would set me up well for my future career in academia. I plan to get my PhD in Neuroscience, and to do so at Oxford would be incredible! It has conducted some of the best neurodegenerative disease research in the world, to be a part of that would be amazing."
