CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Women's Golf finished fourth among skilled competition at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invite at the par-72 Governors Club course, wrapping up play on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
Final Results
The Spartans, who finished seven shots over par, were led by junior Brooke Biermann, who was a stroke shy of the top-10, placing 12th overall even with par. Junior Katie Lu (+1) and senior Leila Raines (+2) were not far behind, concluding the three-round tournament tied for 15th and 17th respectively. Sophomore Paula Balanzategui finished tied for 16th at +7 while junior Shannon Kennedy rounded out the State lineup in 55th of 80 participants at +12.
MSU opened the tournament Monday morning in fifth with a 294-stroke team score (+6), highlighted by Raines' season-best 70. In the afternoon, the Spartans' play improved, the 284-shot (-4) second round good for third place on the leaderboard at the end of day one. Biermann's season-best 69 in the second round was the top score from any Spartan in the tournament. In the third and final round, Biermann and Lu both posted 71s as the Spartans collectively posted a 293 (+5) on the day, finishing at 871 strokes (+7) across the whole tournament and dropping a spot to fourth.
Florida (-16) and overall individual winner Maisie Filler (-13) paced the field of 14 teams. Auburn finished second at eight shots under par while hosts North Carolina swapped spots with MSU in the final round, placing third and just one shot ahead of the Spartans at six strokes over par.
Senior Valentina Rossi also competed as an individual and led all unattached entrants after the first day behind a 69-stroke second round, but finished third among them and tied for 36th overall at +7 at the conclusion of the tournament.
Next, the Spartans will have a few weeks of preparation ahead of The Landfall Tradition tournament at the Landfall Country Club in Wilmington, N.C. from Oct. 27-29.
