Field Hockey Challenges No. 4 Rutgers in 3-1 Loss at Home

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's field hockey team pulled to within one goal and had a strong second half, but No. 4 Rutgers scored with four minutes left in a 3-1 win over the Spartans at Ralph Young Field on Sunday afternoon.
Michigan State falls to 3-10 overall and 1-6 in the Big Ten Conference, while Rutgers improves to 14-0 overall and 5-0 in league play.
Trailing 2-0 at the break, Michigan State came out strong in the third quarter, with a penalty corner and a pair of shots in the opening two minutes of play.
In the 37th minute, a penalty corner from Ashley Harlock led to a shot from Lulu Fulton that was saved by the team, but a penalty shot was called. Senior Celina Riccardo took the shot and beat Rutgers goalkeeper Sophia Howard to the lower left post, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
A shot from Riccardo was saved with just over three minutes left in the quarter as MSU out-shot RU 5-1 in the quarter and took three penalty corners.
Rutgers pushed the lead back to two goals early in the final frame. The Scarlet Knights were awarded a pair of penalty corners in the first four minutes. On the second corner, the ball initially left the circle, but Bridy Molyneaux had a pair of shots and scored on her second to give RU the 3-1 lead.
MSU finished the second half with an 8-4 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corners.
Rutgers had controlled things from outset and got on the board early in the game, with Molyneaux scoring her first goal just under five minutes into the contest. Midway through the second quarter, Carly Snarski sent a long cross from the near sideline into the box and Guillermina Causarano blasted it home for a 2-0 lead with seven minutes left before the half.
Overall, Rutgers out-shot Michigan State, 14-10, while each team had seven penalty corners.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Cecily Charles made three saves.
Michigan State jumps back into non-league play next weekend, traveling to play at Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, Oct. 22, with push-back slated for 1 p.m.
