Spartans Battle in 1-0 Loss In Double OT
10/27/2023 9:31:00 PM | Field Hockey
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan State traveled to Ann Arbor to face rival no. 16 Michigan in a battle for the final B1G tournament spot. It resulted in a heartbreaking 1-0 double-overtime loss.
Sixty minutes wasn't enough to determine a winner, but at the 78-minute mark, Wolverine Juliette Manzur found Lora Clarke who sniped it into the back of the net to book Michigan's ticket into the B1G Tournament, which the Wolverines host next week. The Spartans played in their second-straight double overtime game, after falling last Sunday, 2-1, at Miami (Ohio). This was the first OT game between MSU and Michigan since 2016 (Michigan won that one, 2-1.)
Michigan (9-7, 3-5 B1G) held the attack for most of the first 30 minutes, posting nine shots against the Spartans two. The Wolverines thought they had found the net to take a 1-0 lead at the 28-minute mark, but the goal was overturned by the officials on a deflection. Spartans' goalie Cecily Charles had a big first half with six saves, keeping the Spartans tied 0-0 after the first two stanzas.
It was an evenly matched third quarter between MSU and the home team. Spartans' offense showed signs of life with aggressive plays that led to three penalty corner attempts and three shot opportunities. The Wolverines also had three corners and outshot the Green and White 5-3.
Michigan's defense stepped up preventing the Spartans offense to continue their momentum allowing only two total shots through the fourth quarter and both overtime periods. The Wolverines had four total shots in the fourth quarter and first overtime period but put up seven shots in the final eight and half minutes.
Michigan's offense put up 25 shots to the MSU's six. Charles reached double digits saves with 11, including some clutch saves down the stretch to keep it a scoreless game.
MSU completes its Big Ten season with a 1-7 record in conference games. The Spartans (3-12) will finish their season against Ball State with Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. at Ralph Young Field.
