
Four IIHF World Juniors Participants Begin Tournament Monday

East Lansing -- Michigan State has placed four players across three national U20 teams for the 2024 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships. Â

Goaltender Trey Augustine (South Lyon, Mich.) and winger Isaac Howard (Hudson, Wis.) have been selected for Team USA, Tommi Männistö (Riihimäki, Finland) will play for Team Finland, and defenseman Maxim Štrbák (Košice, Slovakia) will be representing his home country for the third consecutive year at this tournament.  Augustine is in his second stint on Team USA for this tournament. Â
The tournament officially begins on Monday, Dec. 26th, but a series of pre-tournament warmup contests will be held beginning on Tuesday, Dec. 19. Männistö and Štrbák face off in the first pre-tournament tilt in Catena Arena in Angelholm.  Team USA will play in the same arena two days later on the 21st when the Americans take on tournament host Sweden. Â

2024 World Junior Tournament Schedule
When the tournament officially begins on Dec. 26, Strbak and Team Slovakia will once again participate in the first game, against Czechia, Finland will take on Canada, and the US will play Norway on the opening day of competition. Â
MSU fifth-year Nicolas Müller is a two-time World Juniors participant prior to coming to Michigan State, (2018, 2019), as is junior Red Savage (2022, 2023) where he was a teammate of Augustine in 2023. With four players across three countries, MSU has its most participants in a single year and is tied for second with four participants for the 2024 Championship (with Michigan and Minnesota).  MSU last had an active player at WOrld Juniors in 2007 (Justin Abdelkader), and last had multiple active players in 2004 (David Booth, Corey Potter, and Dominic Vicari).
In the US, tournament games (beginning Dec. 26) will air live on NHL Network. Â
