
Wrestling Puts on Record-Setting Performance

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Michigan State wrestling team opened dual season on a high note as it swept a trio of teams in Franklin & Marshall (34-10), Bloomsburg (49-0) and Presbyterian (53-0) on Sunday in the Mayser Center. The 53-0 victory is the largest margin of victory in school history, breaking the previous record set last season when they defeated Davidson, 52-0, on Nov. 11, 2022.
With three wins on Sunday the Spartans open the season with a 3-0 record third consecutive season. MSU's blanking Bloomsburg and Presbyterian was the fourth time in program history it posted back-to-back dual shutouts (1981-82, 1969-70, 1948-49). The Green and White registered 11 total pins throughout the three duals.
Against Franklin & Marshall, 125-pound senior Tristan Lujan got the day started for MSU as he defeated Eric Howe in a 6-1 decision to give the Spartans an early 3-0 lead. After a loss at 133 pounds, the Spartans went on run with four-straight victories as 141-pound redshirt senior Jordan Hamdan, 149-pound freshman Clayton Jones, 157-pound senior Chase Saldate and 165-pound senior Caleb Fish all won their respective matches via bonus with two pins and two major decisions.
As the Spartans started to separate with a 23-3 lead, F&M logged two victories at 174 and 184 before 197-pound sophomore Kael Wisler defeated No. 30-ranked John Crawford with a pin at the 5:49 mark. Sophomore 285-pounder Josh Terrill dominated to the tune of a 20-5 tech fall to give MSU the 34-10.
From there, MSU dominated Bloomsburg and Presbyterian winning 20 straight matches to post back-to-back shutouts. Against Bloomsburg five Spartans recorded first period pins (133-pound junior Andy Hampton, Hamdan, Saldate, 174-pound redshirt senior DJ Shannon and sophomore 285-pounder James Campbell). Lujan, Jones, Fish and 184-pounder Misha Lomboy each rolled through their bouts with major decisions on Michigan State's way to a 49-0 victory.
In its record setting dual performance against Presbyterian, Michigan State won eight of the ten matches ended by tech fall or pin. Sophomore 125-pounder Nick Corday and Hampton started the dual of with back-to-back pins to give the Spartans an early 12-0 lead. MSU rattled off five tech falls in the next six matches (Hamdan, sophomore 149-pounder Braden Stauffenberg, Fish, senior 174-pounder Marty Larkin, junior 165-pounder Ryan Boucher). Wrestling at 157, Jones was the lone non-tech winner, defeating his opponent by major decision. Wisler kept the bonus point streak going at 197, adding his second fall as he controlled George Hopkins and rolled him to his shoulders for the pin with 17 seconds remaining. Terrill's heavyweight match was cut short due to injury default.
