Sarasota, Florida - Michigan State capped its opening weekend of the season with strong performances up and down the lineup, capturing three podium performances in the grand finals at the Sunshine State Invitational.

The highest-finishing crew was MSU's novice eight, which raced in the third varsity eight races this weekend and won gold with a time of 6:49.39, just edging out Kansas for the top spot – the Jayhawks were a bowball back in a time of 6:49.62 MSU's second novice eight finished fifth in the same race, behind Kansas State, and Jacksonville in a time of 7:17.14.
MSU's varsity four captured silver in the grand final in a time of 7:18.65, behind only Big Ten foe Wisconsin. . MSU's third varsity four, racing in the 2V4 race, earned a third-place finish in a time of 7:31.87, just edging out the Spartan second varsity four by a bowball for bronze. The 2V4 was clocked in 7:32.16, .27 seconds behind its teammates.
In the varsity eights, the 2V was clocked in 6:39.31 to take fourth place, a length behind gold medalist Central Florida (6:34.42). Miami and Wisconsin were both a half a length back of the Knights, followed by MSU. MSU's top boat was sixth in the V8 grand final, posting a time of 6:41.30 – edging out Central Florida (6:41.48). Tulsa won the varsity eight race in a time of 6:29.49.
The Spartans will be back in action on this same racecourse next weekend for the Big Ten Invitational.
