Alston, Baylis and Broecker Honored as PNC Achievers Student-Athletes of the Month

EAST LANSING, MICH. - Michigan State Athletics and PNC Bank are partnering to recognize the PNC Achievers Student-Athletes of the Month. Throughout the 2022-23 season, deserving Spartan student-athletes will be recognized for displaying well-rounded achievement through leadership in the classroom, in the community, and in competition.

The honorees for March were Lexy Alston (women's track & field), Luke Baylis (men's tennis) and Bryan Broecker (baseball).

Alston, a junior sprinter from Amherst, Ohio, is a journalism major with a concentration in sports broadcasting. She qualified for the Big Ten Indoor Championships this year, placing 25^th in the 400m with a personal best 57.96. Alston transferred to MSU in 2022 after spending two seasons at Eastern Michigan as a starter on the women's soccer team. Alston has been pursuing her broadcasting career since arriving in East Lansing, working with the Big Ten Network StudentU program, announcing numerous Spartan home contests.

"Lexy is an exemplary student-athlete," said Shelby Spano, the Spartan track & field academic advisor. "She is successful on the track but also has left lasting impressions on the professors and staff here at MSU. On top of that, she sports one of the top GPAs in women's track & field. She is motivated and will be extremely successful in her chosen field of sports broadcasting."

Baylis, a junior from Clarkston, Mich., is a psychology major. He is third on the team with eight singles victories this season, after leading the team with 21 single wins as a sophomore. Baylis was an Academic All-Big Ten selection last year. Off the court, he is the team's SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) representative, and has been active in the community with his teammates at events such as Teams for Toys and the student-athlete food drive.

"Luke is an exceptional student-athlete who brings character, energy and leadership to his team on a daily basis," said men's tennis' academic coordinator Danny Sager. 'He has been a consistent performer in the classroom and is a true role model for his teammates. He has a very bright future ahead."

Broecker, a redshirt sophomore catcher from Chicago, Ill., is an applied engineering science major. He is third on the team in batting average (.343) and on-base percentage (.472), while also second with seven home runs, and fourth with 28 RBI and 26 runs scored. Behind the plate, Broecker has thrown out 50% of base runners (13-of-26), following up on his Big Ten-best 22 caught stealers last year. Last year, he was also named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and Academic All-Big Ten. Broecker is baseball's SAAC representative, and in the local community has been involved with student-athlete food drives, Teams for Toys, Operation Christmas Child and Eli's Project.

"Bryan always finds time to give back to the community and does so with a smile," said Brianne Wojciakowski, Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Development. "Bryan has shown great leadership within his role as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and continues to make a difference."
