Â
The Spartans will field seven boats this weekend against Big Ten opponents, and racing begins at 9 am with the novice entries. Ohio State will have nine entries, fielding two boats in each the second novice eight and third varsity four races.Â
Â
MSU is in its fourth competition weekend of the spring, with these races in Columbus and a next Saturday (April 30) at IRA Eastern Sprints before the Big Ten Championships, which will be held on Sunday, May 14 in Indianapolis.Â
Â
MSU is coming off a weekend of racing at home against Miami, Temple, and Eastern Michigan novices. MSU's top two boats each split the day, falling to Miami and defeating Temple, both falling to the Hurricanes by just over five seconds at the finish but bouncing back with strong afternoon performances.Â
Â
Both of MSU's novices continued their recent success – the top novice boat posted margins of better than 30 seconds over the MSU 3V and nearly a minute over outside competition in both of their races against the Hurricanes and Eagles. The second novices both posted open-water victories as well, over Miami's third varsity eight and the Eastern Michigan novices.Â
Â
The fours – MSU put four of them in the water on Saturday – also experienced success. The varsity four had open water against both Miami and Temple, while the third four posted wins over the Hurricanes and MSU's fourth varsity four entry. The Spartan second four edged out Miami by 1.5 seconds in the morning session, but lost to Temple in the afternoon.Â
