Rowers Complete Big Ten Invitational

East Lansing -- Michigan State wrapped up its final day of racing at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota on Saturday in the final day of competition at the Big Ten Invitational.

The Spartan novices paced Michigan State's success on the day, each picking up victories. The novice eight posted a win by three tenths of second over Iowa (6:53.706-6:54.00), and open-water margins over Tennessee and UCF. The second novice boat was open water (7:14.447) over both Iowa and Wisconsin. Over the course of the weekend, MSU's novice boat earned two victories and finished second once to Ohio State, while the second novice finished second, third, and first, respectively, in its three races.

Michigan State was facing a field of ranked crews all weekend, with 15 of the 16 entries either ranked in the CRCA top 20 or were receiving votes.

MSU's varsity eight entry (7:16.725) took fourth behind UCF, about eight tenths of a second behind third-place UCF. The Knights also finished third ahead of MSU in the 2V8 race (7:31.897-7:35.299), but with a margin of over three seconds. The Spartan eight earned a second-place finish on Friday morning over both Minnesota and UCF, behind just UCLA.

The Spartan varsity four was four tenths of a second behind Tennessee (7:15.127-7:16.725) on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, UCF's second four finished in third place, edging Michigan State (7:39.465) by about three seconds after the Spartans had finished third in each of their first two races on the weekend. SMU won the third varsity four race in a time of 7:24.303, beating three B1G squads – Iowa, Wisconsin, and MSU (7:39.465)

Michigan State has a home race next weekend on Lake Ovid in Laingsburg. Miami, Temple and Tulsa will travel to Michigan for the double dual.
