Spartans blanked by Hawkeyes in opener of three-game series.
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Michigan State baseball was defeated by Iowa Friday night at Iowa's Duane Banks Field in the opener of the three-game Big Ten Conference series by final score of 9-0.
MSU was beaten in the opener of its final road series of the regular-season, and were also shutout for the first time this season and first time since 2021, in sliding to 29-17 overall and 10-9 in B1G action. Iowa improved to 35-12 overall and 11-7 in B1G action, winning four of its last five and 10 of the last 12.
Saturday's game two of the series has been moved up to a 12:05 p.m. ET / 11:05 a.m. CT start time due to inclement weather in the Iowa City forecast for Saturday afternoon.
Friday was MSU's first visit to Iowa City since 2019, and the Spartans' lead in the all-time series was trimmed to 83-73-1 as the Hawkeyes have won eight of the last 11 match-ups in the all-time series.
MSU finished with three hits after being blanked in the hit column until the seventh inning. Leadoff hitter junior infielder Trent Farquhar, redshirt-sophomore catcher Bryan Broecker and junior outfielder Greg Ziegler had the Spartans' three hits. Farquhar, Ziegler, along with junior infielders Mitch Jebb and Brock Vradenburg all drew a walk each, while Broecker drew a free pass by getting hit by a pitch. Iowa scored its nine runs on 11 hits.
On the mound, freshman Joseph Dzierwa scattered eight hits and five runs over 5.0 IP, with one walk and three strikeouts. Junior Noah Matheny (2.1, 2 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K) and senior Brian Martin (0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K) finished the night out.
The Spartans threatened in their first at bat, as Farquhar and Jebb led off the game with walks off Iowa starting pitcher Marcus Morgan, before the rally was snuffed out by a strikeout and inning-ending double play.
Iowa got out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, as Sam Peterson led off the inning with a solo home run to left and the Hawkeyes later manufactured a run with a double and single.
The home team Hawkeyes added a run in the second and two more in the fourth, coming on a two-run homer, for a 5-0 lead through four frames.
MSU got its first hit of the night in the top of the seventh, after Iowa brought in reliever Jared Simpson to replace Morgan after his 6.0 IP without a hit, but four yielded four walks to the Spartans. Broecker smacked a one-out single up the middle off Simpson for a base hit, but an inning-ending double play thwarted the threat by MSU.
Ziegler laid down a two-out bunt single in the eighth that was followed by Farquhar with a single to left, but a strikeout ended the rally.
Michigan State plays the middle game of the series on Saturday in a 12:05 p.m. ET / 11:05 a.m. CT first pitch, before Sunday's series finale is currently slated for a 2:05 p.m. ET / 1:05 p.m. CT start time.
The Spartans then host its final non-conference contest, welcoming Central Michigan to East Lansing and McLane Stadium at Kobs File on Tuesday, May 16, before the regular-season finale, hosting Indiana, Thursday-Saturday, May 18-20. MSU's Senior Day is Saturday, May 20.
