Jebb knocks pair of hits for Spartans.
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Michigan State baseball was downed by Iowa, 5-1, Sunday afternoon in the Big Ten Conference weekend series finale at Iowa's Duane Banks Field.
Sunday's game was played in breezy, damp conditions, as rain lightly fell a majority of the game.
The Spartans are now 29-19 overall with the loss, also moving to 10-11 in B1G play, being defeated in their third B1G series after winning four of the previous league series. The Hawkeyes moved to 37-12 overall and 13-7 in B1G play. Iowa has won six of its last seven and 12 of its last 14. The Hawkeyes finished their home ledger with a 23-3 home mark, while the Spartans completed regular-season road game action with a 10-13 road record.
Michigan State's bat were stymied by Iowa pitching on Sunday, with just three hits in scoring its one run. The Hawkeyes posted their five runs on 11 hits.
"Another tough loss today and a tough weekend for us," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "We ran into a very good pitching staff this weekend and we weren't able to put enough runs on the board. We'll get back to McLane Stadium at Kobs Field on Tuesday and be ready to play Central Michigan, and then our guys will be ready to play against Indiana next weekend."
MSU wraps up regular-season action at home, starting with in-state foe Central Michigan on Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m. at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field, before concluding B1G play and its regular-season ledger hosting Indiana, Thursday-Saturday. The finale B1G series of the season gets going Thursday night with a 6:05 p.m. first pitch, followed by Friday's series second game also at 6:05 p.m., before Saturday's series and regular-season finale at 1:05 p.m. Saturday will be MSU's Senior Day, honoring their senior players and student managers.
Junior infielder Mitch Jebb knocked two of MSU's three hits, going 2-for-4. Redshirt-sophomore catcher Bryan Broecker had the Spartans' other hit with a double in the ninth, and also posted MSU's lone RBI, drawing a bases-loaded walk in the sixth, driving in junior outfielder Greg Ziegler, who led off the inning with a walk. Junior infielder Brock Vradenburg and Trent Farquhar, along with junior outfielder Jack Frank joined Broecker and Ziegler in drawing walks.
On the mound, junior southpaw Nick Powers went 5.0 IP, scattering seven hits with three runs, one walk and three Ks in being dealt the loss, his second in as many weeks after starting with a 5-0 mark. Senior Wyatt Rush pitched the final 3.0 IP, with four hits, two runs and two Ks.
Defensive highlights included Broecker throwing out one base stealing attempt, his B1G-leading 17th of the season.Â
The Spartans threatened in the first, as Jebb reached on an infield single, and Frank later drew a walk, but a strikeout thwarted the threat.
Iowa came out swinging out of the gates with a triple by leadoff hitter Ben Wilmes and later an RBI double by Brennan Dorighi gave the home team an early 1-0 lead.
From there, MSU's bats were stymied by Iowa pitcher Brody Brecht, retiring 13 Spartans in a row.
Iowa added a run in the second on a leadoff HR by Michael Seegars, and another run in the fourth on a sac fly, for a 3-0 lead.
Ziegler led off the sixth with a walk, for MSU's first baserunner since the sixth inning, and Farquhar followed with a walk to put two Spartans on with no outs. Two batters later, Vradenburg drew a walk to fill the bases full of Spartans, and two batters after that, Broecker drew the bases loaded walk for the RBI and MSU's first and what turned out to be only run of the game, pulling within 3-1.
Iowa made a pitching change to open the seventh, bringing on Jack Whitlock to replace Brecht and he retired the Spartans in order.
The Hawkeyes tacked on two runs in the seventh on an two-run single to open a 5-1 advantage.
MSU tried to rally in the ninth with Broecker leading off with a double to right, but the next three Spartans went down in order to end the rally and the game.
The Spartans return home for their final four games of the regular-season, hosting their last non-conference contest, welcoming Central Michigan to East Lansing and McLane Stadium at Kobs File on Tuesday, May 16, before the regular-season finale, hosting Indiana, Thursday-Saturday, May 18-20. MSU's Senior Day is Saturday, May 20.
