MSU’s 2022 closer headed to Florida Complex League Twins.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Former Michigan State baseball player Kyle Bischoff has signed a free agent contract with the Minnesota Twins.
After signing with the Twins, Bischoff was assigned to the Florida Complex League Twins, who are the Rookie-level affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, competing in the Florida Complex League of Minor League Baseball. The team plays in Fort Myers, Florida, at the Lee County Sports Complex. Bischoff will wear jersey number 50 with the FCL Twins.
Bischoff, a Macomb, Michigan native, had a standout season in his one season for the Green & White in 2022, transferring to MSU from Toledo. He earned Third-Team All-Big Ten Conference accolades after leading MSU and the Big Ten with 12 saves, ranking No. 2 on MSU's single-season saves list behind Jeff Kinley's school-record 13 saves in 2014. Bischoff posted a 2-1 record, leading MSU with a 3.51 ERA, tallying 36 strikeouts in 41.0 IP, with one combined shutout, in 2022. Â
During a span of just over a week during the 2022 season, Bischoff earned three saves and a win. He earned back-to-back saves in MSU's wins over Oakland on April 19, 2022 and over Eastern Michigan a night later, then came on in early relief in MSU's win at Northwestern on April 24, coming on in the first inning with the bases loaded and pitched a career-high 6.1 IP of relief to earn the win. He then collected the save in MSU's win over Purdue Fort Wayne on April 27.
The 12 saves also ranks Bischoff part of a four-way tie for No. 5 on MSU's career saves list, matched by this season's closer, Wyatt Rush, along with Mike Ericson (1987-90) and Domanick Squires (1999-2002).Â
Before signing with the Twins, Bischoff had been playing with the Westside Wooly Mammoths of the USPBL (United Shore Professional Baseball League), ringing up 19 strikeouts in 18.2 IP, posting five saves in 18 appearances in the summer of 2022. He shifted to starting pitcher for 2023, posting eight strikeouts against just three walks with no runs in 8.0 IP in two starts, limiting the opposition to a paltry .143 average against. Highlights include chalking up eight strikeouts in 5.0 IP with just two hits and no runs in his first start, earning USPBL Pitcher of the Week honors on May 22.
