
MSU Baseball’s Farquhar Signs NDFA With Philadelphia Phillies

Becomes fourth Spartan to join the professional ranks this week, joining draft picks Jebb, Vradenburg and Broecker.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball's Trent Farquhar signed a non-drafted free agent contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Junior infielder Farquhar is the fourth former Spartan to join the professional ranks this week after three teammates were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft earlier in the week. Mitch Jebb was drafted in the second round of the by the Pittsburgh Pirates, Brock Vradenburg in the third round by the Miami Marlins and Bryan Broecker in the 13th round by the Tampa Bay Rays, marking the first time that MSU had three draft selections in the same draft since 2019.
Farquhar, a native of Highland, Mich., earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2023. He was also the recipient of MSU's Danny Litwhiler Defensive Player of the Year team award for the third-straight year.
One of four Spartans to start and play all 55 games in the 2023 season, Farquhar started 50 at second base and five at shortstop. Farquhar led MSU and finished sixth in the B1G with 139 assists, logging 105 putouts in 247 chances for a .988 fielding percentage. He was a part of 23 fielding double plays, ranking tied for 25th in the B1G.
At the plate, Farquhar ranked eighth in B1G in toughest to strikeout (8.2 AB per K), with just 26 strikeouts in 213 ABs. Farquhar was also fifth in the B1G and 114th in the NCAA in on-base percentage (.467), in addition to ranking ninth in the league in batting average (.343). He also ranked seventh in the B1G and tied for 85th in the NCAA in doubles (19), along with fifth in the league and tied for 109th in the nation in doubles per game (0.35). Additionally, he ranked 11th in the conference in runs (59), just behind teammate Brock Vradenburg (62), and also ranked ninth in the league and 135th in the nation in runs per game (1.07). The Spartan second baseman was also tied for 14th in the conference in hits (73) and tied for 20th in hit by pitch (11). Farquhar was second on the team in average and on-base percentage, along with second in runs scored, hits and doubles, leading the team in walks and hit by pitch.
He was third on the team in multiple hit games with 22, posting three hits in seven games, while tallying two hits in 15 contests. Farquhar had eight multiple RBI games, with two ribbies in four games, three RBI in three contests and highlighted by a career-high four RBI at USC Upstate (Feb. 24), boosted by career-best two doubles.
Farquhar registered a team-long 16-game hitting streak (Feb. 20-March 24), then a six-game streak (March 26-April 7) and adding a seven-game streak (April 8-19), for a stellar streak of at least one hit in 29 of 31 games. Farquhar added another four-game and a three-game hit spurt, finishing the season with at least one hit in 44 of the 55 games.
Off the diamond, Farquhar was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten and a two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honoree.
