EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's soccer opens the 2023 season ranked No. 17 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, as announced by the organization Tuesday.
The ranking marks the Spartans' first appearance in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll in program history following a historic 2022 season that saw MSU spend six-straight weeks in the United Soccer Coaches and TopDrawerSoccer national polls. The Spartans entered the polls on October 11, 2022, for the first time since 2009 and earned a program-high United Soccer Coaches ranking at No. 6 for three consecutive weeks, also earning their first United Soccer Coaches postseason ranking in program history at No. 15 to wrap up the season.
Founded in 1941 and based in Kansas City, Missouri, United Soccer Coaches has grown into the world's largest soccer coaches' organization that serves members at every level of the game. Each week, a panel of eight voters ranks the 25 best women's college soccer teams in the nation, with the first-place team receiving 25 points, the second-place team earning 24 points, and so on.
MSU was one of five Big Ten teams to be either ranked or receiving votes in the preseason poll.
The Spartans posted a 17-3-3 overall record in 2022, including an unblemished 9-0-1 record in conference play en route to the program's first Big Ten regular season title. MSU advanced to the Big Ten Tournament championship game and earned its first NCAA tournament berth since 2009, advancing to the second round.
MSU opens the 2023 regular season at home against Cincinnati on August 17. Kickoff at DeMartin Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. Season and single-game tickets can be purchased HERE.
