EAST LANSING, Mich. – Despite a strong defensive performance, Michigan State dropped an overtime decision to no. 17 Ohio State, 2-1.
Celebrating alumni day, Michigan State (1-5, 0-1 B1G) went toe-to-toe with Ohio State (8-1, 2-0 B1G) that was highlighted by the Spartans starting goalie, CC Charles. Charles recorded a career-high 14 saves, tied for the most in a game at Ralph Young Field (Molly Cassidy had 14 saves also, against Ohio State, in 2011). Charles' 14 saves was the most in a game for MSU since 2019, when Jade Arundell had 15 against Michigan.
Charles kept the Spartans in the game against the potent OSU offense, including stopping a penalty stroke at 13:11 in the fourth quarter.

Buckeyes Forward Makenna Webster broke the 0-0 tie as she charged the middle of the circle to get the visitors on the board. Just two minutes later. Webster 10 goals ranks second in the nation.
With under two minutes of regulation to play, the home team kept battling. Graduate transfer, Lena Kassel drew a penalty in the circle and was granted a penalty stroke. She netted her first career goal in the Green and White to tie it up, 1-1, to send Michigan State into its second consecutive overtime game.

The Buckeyes had a yellow card that followed into overtime. The Spartans tried to take advantage of the extra man opportunity when Lulu Fulton attempted a shot on goal but was saved by Danson.
Four minutes into the overtime period, Zella Bailey scored into the top left of the net to send Ohio State home with a victory. The visitors were aggressive from start to finish leading in corners attempts, 19-7, and shots, 24-11.
WORDS FROM SPARTAN HEAD COACH HELEN KNULL
"I'm proud of the way the team played today, we stuck to our game plan through all four quarters and overtime, that was great to see. Ohio State is a great team; this was our first conference game and we get to learn from this to be prepared for Indiana."
WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE SPARTANS
The Spartans will continue Big Ten play as they host Indiana University on Friday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m.

Here's that game-tying penalty stroke goal from Lena Kassel that tied the game late! Her first goal as a Spartan, to boot. pic.twitter.com/Bn5tNON1dj
