Opening Statement…
Great night for the Spartans at Breslin for multiple reasons. I thought our team responded after our game on Saturday and we had some special cherry on top with Mo scoring 1000 points and Tory and Theryn with their career high. I was proud of the way that we listened, learned and took some of the things after our game on Saturday.
On the biggest difference tonight from the past weekend…
I thought our pace, effort and energy was something we were missing. We were talking a lot about rebounding and how hard the game is if we don't do that. The game becomes a lot more manageable when you do. I thought it started there but I also thought we shared the ball better. We had better ball movement and we had better stops. I also had multidimensional scoring that really helped us.
On how the team responded to the physicality of today's game…
It's the Big Ten. Coach Dean Love always says, 'it's big girl basketball.' We knew coming in Purdue is a really physical team. They played through their posts a lot but I thought our team rebounded really well. For us to get 10 offensive rebounds makes the game a lot better.
On going forward in the season playing like this…
It makes us a lot better and hopefully we can keep it up. We had points in the paint, free throws and we shot the three well. If you can find multiple levels of scoring, that makes a big difference.
On the emphasis of getting to the rim…
It's just better basketball when we can play that way. Defensively, we rebounded much better. The game of basketball is so fun because it is so interconnected and you don't just get to be a one way player. When we are getting stops and forcing turnovers our offense is a lot better.
On the transitions made with Abby in the second half…
You don't want to give a player easy looks and I thought that in the second half we did a much better job at finding her.
On two bench players coming off and scoring over 25…
It's such a great boost and a great spark for our team. That matters that they brought it into the game.
On playing Seven players…
It matters a lot. We have had some challenges with kids out, but very few teams in our league play seven players for 20 or more minutes. I think we have very good depth and we want to be able to use that to our advantage.
On Julia's performance…
She jumps very well. Her ability to finish at the rim, even with people bigger than her she still elevates. I haven't coached someone who has done that before and she utilizes it very well.
On coaching Mo and watching her reach 1000 career points…
I am really grateful I have gotten a year to coach her. She is a kid that you are lucky to coach. She is an every kid, and every practice kid, every possession kid. She has all kinds of peaks and valleys through her years and she keeps showing up. You don't score 1000 points on accident. It is a work ethic piece and it is just something you are so proud of. I love to be a part of it. As impressive as her 1000 points are, she is also one of the best defenders in this league and always finds ways to make people miss shots. Her ability to score and guard really separates her as a player.
On Tory's big third quarter…
I thought there was one point in the third quarter where we just needed a bucket. They had a little momentum and I remember she got an offensive rebound putback and it just felt like we got the momentum back ourselves. A big part of it was her finishing, offensive rebounds and posting up. I was really proud of the way she was posting and finishing at the basket. When you get five offensive rebounds you're going to find your way to the free throw line.
On Tory stepping up after Julia fell...
It has been a huge strength of our team. A big piece of our team is interchanged pieces. We had different kids step up on different nights and Tory was electric tonight. We knew coming in Purdue plays a lot through their four and five. We knew we were going have to fight and battle and I thought she did a great job at that.
On her first taste of the Michigan vs. Michigan State rivalry…
I love rivalries. I think they make college athletics even sweeter and we are fortunate to have a literal down the road rivalry. I sometimes think Rivalries are made up but this is a real state rivalry. I am excited for it and I know that the game elevates to another level so we will have to be able to handle that and be ready to compete at a high level.
On what was said to Tory after the technical…
I think I said, 'next play but don't do that again.'
