Spartans Back in Action this Weekend in the Tar Heel Invitational

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's women's golf team is back in action this weekend, playing in the Tar Heel Invitational at the Finley Golf Course, in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament tees off on Friday, Oct. 11 and continues trough Sunday, Oct. 13.
The Spartans tee off on Friday morning at 9:20 a.m., playing alongside Vanderbilt and Tennessee. The teams will play on the par-70, 6,081-yard course at the Governor's Club. The Club is a nationally-recognized course in Chapel Hill built around an award-winning 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course.

THE TAR HEEL INVITATIONAL FIELD
The 17-team field includes five teams ranked among the top-25 by the Women's Golf Coaches Association. Host North Carolina (T23) is joined by Michigan State (25), Duke (16), East Carolina, Florida International, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, NC State, Rollins College, Tennessee, UNCG, UNCW, Vanderbilt (18), Virginia Tech, Wake Forest (7) and Western Carolina.

Senior Brooke Biermann fired an 8-under par 64 in the final round and Michigan State's women's golf team posted the best team score of the day as the Spartans finished in second place among 15 teams at the Mary Fossum Invitational on Sept. 23 … MSU shot an 8-under par 280 in the final round and finished the 2-day, 54-hole event at 2-under par 862 (290-292-280) … Biermann finished the third round with 8 birdies and an 8-under par 64, a personal best, the second-best 18-hole score in the history of the Mary Fossum Invitational and tied for the second-lowest 18-hole score in MSU history … Biermann led the Spartans, finishing in second place at 11-under par 205. … Her score of 205 was a personal best, the second-best score in tournament history and tied for the third-lowest 54-hole tournament score in program history … Biermann was one three players to finish among the top-10 overall, joined by senior Katie Lu and junior Taylor Kehoe, who both tied for ninth place at 2-over par 218 … Lu shot a 1-over par 73 in the final round for her 218 (74-71-73), while Kehoe fired a 3-under par 69, with four birdies in her final eight, finishing at 218 (75-74-69).
TAR HEEL INVITATIONAL HISTORY
Michigan State has a strong history at the Tar Heel Invitational as the Spartans are making their 15th consecutive appearance in the tournament. The Spartans have won the event twice, most recently in 2019, when Valery Plata took home medalist honors with an 11-under par 205, the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history. MSU also won the event in 2009. In 2011, Caroline Powers-Ellis set a then school-record 8-under-par 208 to finish second, while Sarah Burnham finished as the runner-up in 2015. Paz Marfa Sans set a tournament record with an 8-under-par 64 in the second round in 2017. MSU finished in fourth place in last year's event.
