SEATTLE – No. 5 Michigan State women's soccer was overtaken late in its second West Coast road game of the week, falling 2-1 to Washington Sunday afternoon at Washington's Husky Soccer Stadium.Â
Suffering their first loss of the year, the Spartans drop to 9-1-5 overall and 4-1-3 in the Big Ten. Washington moves to 8-4-2 (5-3 B1G). MSU's program-record unbeaten streak comes to an end at 14 games with the result.Â
In the box score, the Huskies outshot the Spartans, 16-9, and held a narrow 4-3 advantage in the corner kick battle. Graduate forward Mackenzie Anthony led the Spartans in shots with four, while graduate goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks made one save in 90 minutes of play in goal.Â
After three early shots from Washington in the first five minutes of the game, the Spartans took over offensively. In the eighth minute, after a strong build up from the center circle, junior defender Sofia Beerworth sent a ball into the box from the right flank that found the foot of a Washington defender. The ball bounced off the Washington defender and into the goal, giving MSU an early 1-0 lead.Â
MSU dominated possession following the Washington own goal. Senior forward Jordyn Wickes forced a save by Husky goalkeeper Mia Hamant in the 11th minute before sophomore defender Renee Watson sent two more shots into the gloves of Hamant. Washington followed with their own shot a minute later, but the Spartan defense blocked the shot to keep the Huskies off the board.Â
Washington was awarded a free kick just outside the box in the 21st minute. Ioanna Papatheodorou's free kick rattled off the crossbar and into the goal to tie the game with just under 25 to go in the half. Â
Neither side was able to generate much offensively for the remainder of the half. The Huskies registered four more shots in the closing 15 minutes, but MSU's defense held strong, holding off any scoring opportunity for the Huskies as the teams headed to the break sitting at 1-1.Â
The Spartans came out of the gates strong in the second half, controlling all of the possession throughout the first 25 minutes. Graduate forward Meg Hughes recorded the first shot of the half from either side in the 54th minute that was saved by Hamant before forcing another Hamant save in the 57th minute.Â
MSU got another good look from Anthony in the 64th minute, but her shot in front of goal went just right. The Spartans continued to push for the go-ahead goal as another shot from Anthony was blocked minutes later.Â
The Huskies drew a pair of corner opportunities in the 78th and 79th minutes, but despite a flurry of shots from Washington, MSU's defense held off each threat to keep the score level. Â
Washington drew another foul just outside the box in the 86th minute. Papatheodorou once again took the free kick and scored for the Huskies, giving Washington a 2-1 lead with under five minutes remaining.Â
The Spartans pushed for the equalizer in the closing minutes but could not generate any scoring chances as the Huskies held on for the 2-1 victory.Â
Up next, MSU hosts three-straight home games to close the regular season, beginning with Wisconsin on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium.Â
