First home tournament of the season closes with victories from Stasny and Morais.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's tennis completed their first at-home tournament of the season on Sunday, wrapping up the three-day Michigan State Classic presented by Auto-Owners Insurance at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
With three days of game play, Michigan State women's tennis put in the work, and put up solid performances across the board.
Spartan freshman Amara Brahmbhatt, junior Matilde Morais, junior Issey Purser and sophomore Natalie Stasny competed in rounds of singles and doubles against competitors from Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Xavier.
Sunday morning, the Morais/Stasny tandem kicked off the action against Northwestern's Jessel/Rabjohns securing the match at 6-3. Brahmbhatt/Purser also competed in doubles. The pair put up a hard fight against Northwestern's Riester/Shepherd, both teams fiercely competing and putting up points, with Michigan State ultimately dropping the match, 4-6.
Play continued with singles matches, with all four Spartans participating. Morais faced off against an Xavier opponent, Purser against a Northwestern opponent while Brahmbatt and Stasny competed against Michigan foes.
Each match was back-and-forth, with all players putting points on the board.
First to finish was Purser, who competed against challenger Erica Jessel of Northwestern. While Purser was able to put points on the board, she was unable to claim a victory, and lost her match 4-6, 5-7.
Brahmbhatt battled back from losing her first set 2-6 against Michigan's Jessica Bernales, dominating in her second set 6-3 and forcing a third set. While Brahmbhatt gave a strong performance, she dropped the final set, losing 3-6.
Morais was victorious in her first set, winning against Xavier's Sofia Mazzucato 6-4. Mazzucato was able to battle back in the second set, beating Morais 6-2 and causing a third set. The third set was taken by Morais, triumphing 6-4.
The last Spartan to finish the tournament was Stansy, who faced off against Michigan's Ava Bruno. Stasny dropped the first set in a tiebreaker losing 7-6 (7-2). Stasny was able to come back in the second set winning 6-2, being yet another to force a third set. Instead of typical play, the two played to 10 points, with Stasny winning the match, 10-7.
The Green & White return to the MSU Indoor Tennis Center next weekend from Nov. 1-2 to host the Spartan Invite.
