10/30/2024 12:08:00 PM | General
Here's a look at the week ahead (October 30-November 5) for Michigan State Athletics:
Football
Michigan State football opens the final month of the season with a home contest against #13 Indiana, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (Peacock). The Hoosiers enter the contest with a perfect 8-0 record. Since 1950, the winner of the Michigan State-Indiana game has been presented the Old Brass Spittoon. The brass spittoon came from one of Michigan's earliest trading posts and is widely believed to be more than 200 years old. Last season, MSU won in Bloomington, 24-21, on a touchdown in the final two minutes.
Cross Country
The men's and women's cross country teams head to Champaign, Illinois for the 2024 Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Friday. Both teams face excellent competition, as MSU is one of six ranked teams on the women's side, while the men's field includes three ranked squads.
Women's Soccer
No. 16 Michigan State opens play in the 2024 Big Ten Tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Spartans will face fifth-seeded Rutgers Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET in St. Paul, Minnesota, where the entire first round and quarterfinals are being played. The MSU-Rutgers winner will move on to St. Louis where the semifinals (Nov. 7) and finals (Nov. 10) will be played. MSU's Kaleigh McPherson was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal against Purdue.
Men's Soccer
The men's soccer team closes the regular season Sunday at DeMartin Stadium against Rutgers. It's Senior Celebration presented by HAP CareSource as Spartan seniors will be honored in a post-game ceremony. The Spartans, currently in fourth place in the Big Ten, are coming off a 2-2 tie at No. 1 Ohio State Tuesday.
Volleyball
Following last weekend's West Coast road swing, the Spartans are back at home hosting Minnesota (Friday, 6 p.m.) and Ohio State (Sunday, noon). Last Thursday, the Spartans rallied from an 0-2 deficit to knock off #16 USC in five sets. Friday's match promotion is Grow Your Game, dedicated to empowering youth through sports with activities and experiences planned just for kids.
Men's Basketball
Head coach Tom Izzo begins his 30th season guiding the Spartans when Michigan State hosts Monmouth on Monday, November 4 at 7 p.m. It's a busy opening month for MSU, with eight games in November, including four at Breslin Center.
Women's Basketball
Michigan State opens the season on Tuesday, Nov. 5 against Oakland at Breslin Center (6:30 p.m.). Head coach Robyn Fralick begins her second year on the Spartan bench. In MSU's final exhibition contest against Wayne State, Spartan captain Julia Ayrault was able to share the court with her sister Annabel, a sophomore for the Warriors.
Men's Tennis
Members of the men's tennis team will compete at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Mini Duals Nov. 1-3 in South Bend, Indiana. It will provide a good tune-up prior to next week's Big Ten Indoor Championships. Freshman Danial Rakhmatullayev earned the first Big Ten Player of the Week Award of his Spartan career, becoming the third different MSU player to earn the conference accolade through the first seven weeks of the season, and no other school has earned the award more than once.
