Spartan infielder earns honor after playing with the Royal Oak Leprechauns

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball player Ryan McKay was named a recipient of the Northwoods League 2024 Rawlings 'Finest in the Field' Award, announced by the NWL this week.

While playing for the Royal Oak Leprechauns last summer, McKay posted a .989 fielding percentage in playing second base in 43 games and a total of 374 innings, with 210 total chances, making 85 putouts and tallying 122 assists, against just three errors, and he was part of 23 double plays.

McKay, who is entering his sophomore season with the Spartans in the 2025 season, was the lone Royal Oak Leprechauns representative on the nine-player award list.

Rawlings has been rewarding the top defenders in Northwoods League Baseball since 2002 and this is the first season that they are also giving awards to the top defenders.

McKay and the Spartans will open the 2025 season in mid-February.
