By many accounts, the fall 2024 semester is the best overall academic performance by Spartan student-athletes in department history. For the first time ever for Michigan State Athletics, every team finished the fall with both semester and cumulative GPAs above 3.0, resulting in all-time department highs for both semester (3.4616) and cumulative (3.4324) GPAs.
"I continue to be amazed by the academic performance of our student-athletes," said Michigan State Vice President and Director of Athletics Alan Haller. "They continually elevate their performance in the classroom, breaking marks once believed to be unreachable."
The all-time high department cumulative GPA of 3.4324 marks the 28th consecutive semester over a 3.0. The previous high was 3.3744, established last spring. Nine teams (men's and women's basketball, football, hockey, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's track & field, and wrestling) posted their highest cumulative GPA in program history, while two more squads (field hockey and rowing) recorded their highest post-fall cumulative GPA.
The new record high semester cumulative GPA of 3.4616 was a significant increase from the previous mark of 3.3752, established after fall 2020. It's the 24th consecutive semester over a 3.0 semester GPA. Eight teams (men's and women's basketball, men's cross country, field hockey, football, hockey, men's and women's track & field) posted their best ever semester.
Individually, a record 555 students (84% of the student-athlete population) finished fall 2024 with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher. For the semester, 121 students earned a perfect 4.0 GPA among 541 students who earned a 3.0 or higher GPA for the term, marking the second-highest total all-time.
