Spartans defeated by Seton Hall and Lehigh in second day of Swig & Swine Classic.
MSU is now 1-2 on both the weekend and the young season after beating Merrimack, 10-3 Friday afternoon in the season-opener.
"It was a tough day today, we're disappointed in our effort offensively today. We need to be better," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I thought we let the circumstances of the game kind of dictate maybe our mood in the dugout and that can't happen. I thought we pitched it well, for the most part, all day. We had a lot of good things, especially in the second game."
Game one's loss overshadowed sophomore starting pitcher Joseph Dzierwa's career-high nine strikeouts in five innings, scattering six hits and allowing just two runs.
However, the Pirates got to the Spartan bullpen and scored five in the seventh and three in the ninth. The late SH rally overtook MSU, which had taken a 3-2 lead in the fifth on a two-run home run by senior outfielder Jack Frank to straight away center field and into the Wando River beyond the wall.
In game two, Lehigh scored a run in the third and one in the fifth to spoil the Spartan debut of senior starter Aaron Mishoulam, who rang up seven Ks in 5.0 IP. Junior reliever Noah Matheny came on and went 4.0 IP with six strikeouts and no hits, retiring all 12 batters faced and striking out the side in both his first frame of work in the sixth, and doing so again in the eighth.
Both the Spartans and Lehigh had three hits apiece, with MSU getting a double by junior infielder Sam Busch and singled by Frank and junior outfielder Nick Williams.
"I thought Joseph Dzierwa gave us a good start in game one and I thought Aaron Mishoulam was really good in game two and Noah Matheny was also really good in game two," Boss said. "I thought we pitched it well enough, but we need to do some things differently offensively if we're going to have some success tomorrow. We'll make some of those changes tonight, and we need to change our mindset a little bit for tomorrow as well, and I think we'll get a good effort out of our guys tomorrow."
