Michigan State Battles Purdue to 67-62 Big Ten Tournament Loss

Minneapolis, Minn. – Michigan State fought back from an 8-point deficit late in the game to tie it with less than two minutes left on a jumper from graduate guard Tyson Walker, but fell short against top-seeded Purdue, 67-62, in a quarterfinal game of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday at Target Center.
Walker scored a team-high15 points to lead the Spartans, while senior guard A.J. Hoggard had eight points, 10 assists and four rebounds, graduate forward Malik Hall added 12 points and seven rebounds and sophomore guard Tre Holloman finished with 10 points and four rebounds.

- The Spartans trailed by 12 points, 39-27, early in the second half, cut the lead to three points (48-45) and then fell behind by eight points before a late run tied the game.
- After a free throw from Zach Edey gave Purdue a 55-47 lead, Walker hit a trey with 5:33 left to make it 55-50.
- That triggered a 9-1 run as a Walker layup made it 56-62, a dunk from sophomore center Carson Cooper cut the lead to 56-54 and Walker hit an elbow jumper with 1:41 to play, tying it at 56-all.
- Purdue's Fletcher Loyer responded with a 3-pointer to give Purdue the lead for good at 59-56, but the Spartans did not quit.
- A 3-point attempt from freshman forward Xavier Booker rimmed out with 1:05 to play and the MSU cut the lead to two points once and three points twice, but could not get any closer.
- Michigan State trailed by seven points (34-27) at the break and fell behind by as many as 12 points early in the second half (39-27) on a 3-pointer from Braden Smith.
- Trailing by 12, 43-31, after a basket from Zach Edey at the 15:56 mark, the Spartans went on a 14-5 run over 4:06 and pulled to within three points, 48-45 on a dunk from Hall with 11:12 to play.
- Purdue extended its lead back to eight points, 55-47, on a free throw from Edey with 5:44 left, but the Spartans used a 9-1 run to tie the game on Walker's jumper with 1:41 left, setting up the finish.
- The Spartans went into the half trailing 34-27, with Purdue using a 12-6 run over the final 4:32 to extend its lead.
- A 3-pointer from Walker just 30 seconds into the game gave MSU an early edge, but the Boilermakers took an 8-3 lead on a jumper from Edey.
- Walker hit a pullup jumper at 15:23 to make it 10-7, but an 8-3 run from Purdue gave the Boilermakers an 18-10 lead near the mid-point on a 3-pointer from Jones.
- Hall connected on an and-one and Walker hit a 3-pointer to cut the margin to 18-16 and another three-point play from Hall capped an 11-4 run as MSU pulled to within 22-21 at the 4:49 mark.
