MSU denied sweep of weekend series at OSU.
MSU won the series after Friday night's 11-7 triumph before beating OSU in a slugfest, 17-12, on Saturday afternoon. It was the Spartans' second-straight Big Ten series win in as many weekends after taking two of three from Penn State last weekend and capturing this weekend's series at Ohio State.
With Sunday's result, Michigan State is now 19-21 overall and slid to 7-8 in Big Ten play. Ohio State snapped a four-game losing skein in leveling its ledger at 20-20 overall and also 7-8 in conference competition. The Spartans have won the last two series with the Buckeyes, taking two of three last season. Overall, Michigan State has won five of the last seven match-ups with Ohio State, capturing victory in 10 of the last 15 meetings.
"Overall, any time you can win a series, especially on the road, it's a good weekend," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "That's the goal every weekend to win the series, and in the back of our mind, we can roll out of here feeling good about that, but it's tough to get beat on Sunday. I really thought we had a good opportunity to win today to get back into things and make up for getting swept on the road a couple weeks ago. We're disappointed that we lost, but at the same time, when you look at the entire weekend, we're very pleased to win a road series against a good team."
MSU got on the board early as junior infielder Sam Busch belted a three-run home run in the top of the second inning for a 3-0 advantage. OSU scored a run in the bottom of the second and two more in the third to tie it up at 3-all. The Spartans regained a three-run lead in the top of the fifth, scoring a trio of runs on just one hit and capitalizing on a Buckeye error.
However, Ohio State more than offset MSU's top of the fifth with a five-run frame in the bottom of the fifth for an 8-6 lead, before tacking on two more in the sixth and the Spartans were unable to counter.
Graduate catcher Sam Thompson was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while senior outfielder Jack Frank was 1-for-5 with a run scored. Freshman infielder Ryan McKay and Busch were both 1-for-4, with three RBI for Busch on the home, while McKay added a run scored. Senior infielder Dillon Kark had an RBI and a run scored after reaching on an OSU error.
Sophomore infielder Randy Seymour scored a run after drawing a walk in the fifth.
On the mound, senior Nick Ferazzi went 4.0 IP, scattering eight hits and seven runs, with one strikeout in being dealt the loss. Sophomore Nolan Higgins (2.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R) and senior Harrison Cook (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K) finished the outing.
The Spartans burst onto the scoreboard with Busch's three-run blast in the top of the second stanza for the early 3-0 lead.
The Buckeyes bounced back with a run in the second and two in the third to it up at 3-3.
Seymour started off the Spartan fifth with a walk and Frank followed with a single through the right side and Seymour scampered around to third. Kark was up next, reaching on an OSU error to drive Seymour in. Two batters later, senior outfielder Greg Ziegler reached on a fielder's choice, with Kark advancing to third on another OSU error, allowing Frank to score. After a Buckeye pitching change, freshman outfielder Landen Lozier grounded out but drove in Kark to give MSU a 6-3 lead.
It was a short-lived lead as OSU plated five runs on six hits, taking advantage of one hit by pitch and a walk, in the bottom of the fifth, before Higgins got out of the bases loaded jam with a groundout to McKay at second.
The Buckeyes tallied two more runs in the sixth for the final scoring.
