Spartans defeated by Chippewas in-state match-up.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State baseball was downed by in-state foe Central Michigan Tuesday night at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field.
The Chips came out hot to open the game, getting on the board with two runs in the first half inning.
CMU added a run in the third and another in the fifth before plating four in the sixth to open an 8-0 advantage, before tacking on two in the seventh for the 10-0 lead, and MSU was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh to end the game by the run-rule.
Central Michigan out-hit Michigan State, 9-5. Spartan pitchers rang up seven Ks on the night, but issued five walks and six hit by pitch to put Chips' base-runners on.
"We walked five and we hit six, and then we had an obstruction call because we were out of position and didn't know where to go. So overall, that is 12 free opportunities that we gave them, so it absolutely affects everything in the game," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I'm embarrassed by what happened; I will take it, I clearly didn't have these guys ready to play. We didn't attack like we say we wanted to. When you don't attack the hitters and when you don't attack the opponent, you're passive, you end up walking a bunch of guys, hitting a bunch of guys, and putting weak swings on pitches, and you end getting beat 10 to nothing. They certainly handled it a lot better than we did because they went right after us and clearly, we didn't do the same to them."
MSU is now 14-16 on the season with the loss, while CMU moves to 11-22. With Tuesday's result, the Spartans and Chippewas have split the last 12 meetings. Tuesday's meeting in East Lansing was the first time that the series had been played in the same location in back-to-back years since 2007-08 when played in Lansing at Oldsmobile Park and first time in back-to-back years in East Lansing since 1997-98.
Senior outfielder Greg Ziegler was 2-for-3, while senior infielder Dillon Kark, junior infielder Nick Williams and junior pinch hitter Sam Busch added the other hits for the Spartans.
The Chips opened the game by getting on the board in their first at bat, with a pair of runs after a HBP and double was followed by back-to-back RBI groundouts for a 2-0 lead in the first half inning.
CMU added a run in the third on another RBI groundout, and another in the fifth on and RBI single. The Chips scored four in the sixth, boosted by a home run, a two-run double and a sac fly for to stretch the margin to 8-0. CMU added a bases-loaded RBI walk and another HBP RBI in the top of the seventh for the ninth and 10th run of the night.
The Spartans resume Big Ten Conference action with a three-game weekend series at Purdue, Friday-Sunday, April 12-14 at Purdue's Alexander Field in West Lafayette, Ind. The series opens on Friday at 6 p.m. ET, followed by Saturday's game two at 3 p.m. ET and Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m. ET.
