Michigan State will face four teams that reached the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer head coach Damon Rensing announced the Spartans' 2024 schedule on Wednesday.
This season, the Spartans welcome two new Big Ten members in UCLA and Washington. Michigan State will now play 10 league contests, as there are now 11 B1G teams sponsoring men's soccer.
MSU will take on four teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season, including Big Ten foes Indiana and UCLA, along with Oregon State and SIUE. The Cougars are coached by former Michigan State assistant coach Cale Wassermann.
"We are really looking forward the 2024 schedule," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "This schedule has a little bit of everything and with the addition of Washington and UCLA to the Big Ten Conference, one of the best soccer conferences in the country just got better. The schedule has multiple conference champions, multiple NCAA tournament participants and a College Cup participant."
The Spartans will host nine regular-season games at the friendly confines of DeMartin Stadium. Michigan State ended last season seventh in the nation in attendance, averaging 2,291 fans per game, which was also third in the Big Ten.
Michigan State begins preparation for the season with a pair of exhibitions, beginning on the road against Butler (Aug. 12) and at home against UIC (Aug. 16). The Spartans will open the regular season on the road, facing SIUE on Aug 22. MSU will end August with a pair of home games against Bowling Green (Aug. 26) and Villanova (Aug. 30).
"We are looking forward to opening our season at OVC Champion SIUE and taking on former MSU assistant coach Cale Wasserman. He has done a great job there," Rensing said. "A couple regional rivalries, a Big East school, US Air Force Academy, and a college Cup participant in Oregon State makes for a very challenging non-conference schedule."
MSU opens September at the friendly confines of DeMartin Stadium, hosting Oregon State on Sept. 2 and Air Force on Sept. 6. The Spartans will then play three of the final games of the month on the road. Michigan State will travel to in-state rival Oakland (Sept. 9). MSU will open Big Ten play at home in Washington's first Big Ten game on Sept. 13. The Spartans will then end the month on the road at Penn State (Sept. 20) and UCLA (Sept. 27).
As the calendar changes to October, MSU will host Northwestern (Oct. 1), before traveling to Maryland (Oct. 5). The Spartans will host Wisconsin on Oct. 11 before traveling to defending Big Ten Tournament Champion Indiana on Feb. 18. Michigan State will then return home for the annual Battle for the Big Bear trophy against Michigan (Oct. 22). MSU ends October at Ohio State on Oct. 29. The Buckeyes handed the Spartans their only two losses of the season in 2023.
MSU will close out the regular season at home against Rutgers on Nov. 3.Times and ticket information will be announced at a later date at msuspartans.com.
