East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State senior women's golfer Brooke Biermann was named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week on Thursday afternoon.
Biermann helped leads the Spartans to a second-place finish at its home tournament, the Mary Fossum Invitational, on Monday as the team fired an 8-under par 280 in the final round to finish the event at 2-under par 862 (290-292-280).
The Spartans were led by a career-best round on Monday from Biermann, who fired an 8-under par 64 and vaulted into a runner-up finish individually.
Biermann was tied for third after two rounds and five shots of the pace set by individual winner Caitlyn Macnab of Ole Miss, who fired a tournament and Forest Akers West course record with a 9-under par 63 in the first round, but the Spartans senior challenged that mark.
Starting on the fourth hole, she parred the first four holes before birdies on the par-5, 495-yard eighth hole and the par-3, 184-yard ninth hole. That was the first of three-straight birdies and five in six-hole span. Biermann birdied her last hole, the par-4, 372-yard third hole, and fell just one shy of the lead.
Biermann finished the two-day, 54-hole tournament at 11-under par 205 (68-73-64).
She finished the third round with 8 birdies and an 8-under par 64, a personal best, the second-best 18-hole score in the history of the Mary Fossum Invitational and tied for the second-lowest 18-hole score in MSU history.
Her score of 205 was a personal best, the second-best score in tournament history and tied for the third-lowest 54-hole tournament score in program history.
This is the fourth career Golfer of the Week honor for Biermann.
The Spartans are off until Friday, Oct. 11, when the team begins play in the Tar Hell Invitational at the Governor's Club in Raleigh-Durham, N.C. The three-day, 54-hole event runs through Sunday, Oct. 13.
