Lorenzo Pinili Fires 4-Under Par 66 to Take Individual Lead
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's golf team shot a 4-under par 346 and junior Lorenzo Pinili holds the individual lead as the Spartans are in first place among four teams after the first round of stroke play at the St Andrews Links Collegiate, played on the Jubilee Course in St Andrews, Scotland.
Michigan State is one of four schools competing in the three-day tournament, with the first two rounds (stroke play) at the Jubilee Course and on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Old Course, where the game began centuries ago. The teams will play six players (rather than five as in most college tournaments), with the best five scores counting toward the team total in stroke play on Monday and Tuesday.
The Spartans have three golfers among the top-10 overall to finish at 4-under par 346, one shot ahead of second-place Princeton (3-under par 347), with Cal at even-par 350 and the University of St Andrews in fourth place at 2-over par 352.
Pinili fired a 4-under par 66 to lead the Spartans and to take a 1-shot lead in the individual field. He finished his 18 holes with six birdies, tops in the field, and is second among all players with an average score of 2.75 in par-3 holes.
Senior Caleb Bond is tied for third place at 2-under par 68, finishing his round with five birdies, the second-most in the first round.
Junior McCoy Biagioli is tied for seventh place at even-par 70, completing the opening round with a pair of birdies and 15 pars, the second-most in the field. Biagioli is tied for first with an average score of 3.83 on par-4 holes.
Graduate Ashton McCulloch and junior Lucas Acevedo are tied for 13th place with scores of 1-over par 71, respectively. McCulloch posted five birdies during the round and leads the field with a 2.50 average on par-3 holes.
Sophomore Julian Menser shot a 5-over par 75 and is in 23rd place.
The Spartans tee off at 5:42 a.m. (ET) on Tuesday (10:42 a.m. GMT).
Wednesday's Medal Match Play will feature the top two teams in the Championship Match at the Old Course. The third seed will play the fourth seed in the Consolation Match. Monday and Tuesday scores from the stoke play portion of the event will be combined to determine seeding to Wednesday's Match Play.
The St Andrews Links Collegiate will be broadcast live on The Golf Channel throughout the week, as well as Sky Sports in the United Kingdom. Live coverage will air from 9 a.m. to noon (ET), with replays each day.
