Field Hockey falls to #15 Rutgers

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State field hockey fell in its first game of the weekend on Friday afternoon, 5-0, to #15 Rutgers at Ralph Young Field.
MSU moves to 3-7 and will return to action on Sunday, October 5th to host #11 Maryland at Ralph Young Field at noon.
Rutgers owned a 21-6 advantage in shots, a 19-4 edge in shots on goal, while attempting five more penalty corners than the Spartans (7-2)
Graduate student Maddie Lawlor charged the Michigan State offense with a team high three shots, all of which were shots on goal. Junior forward Bianca Pizano also added three shots, with one of her shots being on goal.
Junior Goalkeeper Lyra Gavino tied her season high with 14 saves made and faced a season high 21 shots.
Rutgers started the game off fast, notching two goals in the first 10 minutes of the first period. The Scarlet Knights had one penalty corner attempt in the first period, but Gavino turned the Rutgers offense away with a kick save. Rutgers held a 5-0 advantage in shots through the first period of play.
Michigan State came out of the 1st period with energy, earning a penalty corner attempt. However, the Scarlet Knights kept their foot on the gas, earning three penalty corner attempts following two Lawlor shots on goal and a Pizano shot that sailed wide early in the second period. The Spartans defense turned the Rutgers attack away for the first two penalty corners, with another kick save from Gavino, but the Scarlet Knights converted on their third penalty corner attempt in three minutes of action time, making the score 3-0.
Five minutes later, Rutgers added its fourth goal of the day, taking a 4-0 lead into the halftime break. The Scarlet Knights held a 5-4 lead in shots during the second period, a 4-2 lead on penalty corner attempts, while MSU had a 5-3 edge in saves made during the first half of play.
The Scarlet Knights continued their pressure in the second half, tallying seven shots during the third period, six of which were on goal. Gavino made a slew of consecutive saves during the 37th and 38th minute, keeping the deficit at three entering the fourth period.
In the fourth period of play, Pizano had two good looks on goal, with one of her shots on goal being saved by the Rutgers goalkeeper. Just moments later, Gavino made a save on a shot on goal, but Rutgers recovered the rebound and added their fifth goal of the game
