MSU women’s tennis earns their first B1G honor of the season with Player of the Week for Blackford
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State's Ellie Blackford earned the Big Ten Player of the Week, announced on Wednesday by the conference office, marking the first award of the season for the Spartans.
This B1G Player of the Week accolade serves as Blackford's first career Big Ten honor. Blackford earned the recognition after she slated a strong performance this weekend as MSU hosted the Spartan Invitational, presented by Auto Owner's Insurance, over the past weekend, going 6-0 in overall contention.
In singles contention, the sophomore went 3-0, tabbing a 6-2, 6-1 win versus Ameia Sorey of Indiana, a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Xavier's Madeleine Rexroat and capped off the weekend with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) triumph over Minnesota's Jeselle Ante.
Similarly in doubles matches in teaming with senior Matilde Morais, the Spartan pairing went 3-0 against contenders from Indiana, Minnesota and Xavier.
Blackford claimed four victories over Big Ten opponents over the weekend, the most out of all the Spartans competing.
This is Blackford's second season with the team after having a successful freshman season. During her freshman season, Blackford continuously competed at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.
