Athletics Department Launches FOR SPARTA: The Capital Initiative for MSU Athletics
12/2/2025
As part of Michigan State University’s Uncommon Will. Far Better World campaign, the athletics department has announced FOR SPARTA: The Capital Initiative for MSU Athletics. FOR SPARTA is a $1 billion initiative designed to elevate facilities, enhance the student-athlete experience and secure Michigan State’s position as a leader in college athletics.
“FOR SPARTA sets a bold course for the future of Michigan State Athletics,” said MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D. “By investing in world-class facilities and experiences for our student-athletes, we are positioning MSU to lead in an increasingly competitive landscape. This initiative reflects our commitment to modernize our athletics program and I look forward to seeing the impact it will have on Spartans today and for generations to come.”
FOR SPARTA will provide Michigan State Athletics the strategic resources for facilities and overall program investment to compete at the highest levels. In modernizing facilities throughout the department, MSU is providing student-athletes the optimal spaces in which to compete and train, and the Spartan community an elevated gameday experience. Spartan Fund donors will enjoy the addition of new premium spaces and options. It’s a comprehensive approach that will include several sport specific facility improvements, as well as shared spaces such as a student-athlete dining facility.

“This is the most ambitious initiative in Michigan State Athletics history,” said J Batt, MSU Vice President and Director of Athletics. “While change is happening all around us, our mission of supporting Spartan student-athletes remains resolute. FOR SPARTA is our strategic answer to a rapidly evolving intercollegiate landscape. It will provide the resources and the infrastructure to positively impact the experience and drive competitive excellence for every student-athlete and every sport on our campus.
“Certainly, $1 billion is an aspirational goal. But Spartans have never backed down from a challenge. Throughout history, Michigan State has been a leader in college athletics, and the time has come to lead once again. This is our chance to instill a greater vision for what we believe to be possible. Through a shared singular goal, we will all experience success. Together, we will build the future … For Sparta.”

Publicly launched in 2025, the Uncommon Will. Far Better World campaign is expected to run until 2032. FOR SPARTA follows a similar timeline. Including the campaign planning phase (since 2022), MSU Athletics has already totaled nearly $250 million towards its $1 billion goal.
In December 2024, the Michigan State University Board of Trustees approved Authorization to Plan for the future modernization of Spartan Stadium. The process continues to move forward as the department is in the final stages of finalizing the architect for the project. Prior to the 2025 season, a $28 million project to replace the Spartan Stadium videoboards and renovate the 4th, 7th and 8th floors on the west tower was completed.
Other projects continue to progress as well. In February, the Board authorized MSU Athletics to proceed with new outdoor tennis courts and support building. The courts were ready for play in September 2025 and Spartan Tennis is scheduled to open in April 2026. In spring 2024, MSU Rowing opened a state-of-the-art Rowing Training Center located on Grand River Park in Lansing, complete with a brand-new team locker room, indoor training space and staff offices.
